Igor Markevitch was a celebrated young prodigy composer – Cortot discovered him at 13, Diaghilev commissioned some music from him and he impressed Béla Bartók. He also received conducting lessons from Hermann Scherchen and became a brilliant and demanding conductor. He had then come to the attention of Walter Legge, who engaged him to conduct the Philharmonia Orchestra.
His STEREO version of Sacre du Printemps recorded in 1959 – different from the MONO version done in 1951 with same orchestra - manages to combine tight precision with the vital element of spontaneous surprise and highlights the intensity, the colour and the rhythmic power of the playing. A landmark recording!

geboren am 27. (14.) Juli 1912 in Kiew. Sein Großvater mütterlicherseits war der Maler Ivan P. Pokitonov (1850–1923). Sein Vater Boris, Schüler von Raoul Pugno und Eugen d'Albert, spielte exzellent Klavier und verfasste eine Unterrichtsmethode, die von Alfred Cortot weiterentwickelt wurde. Die Familie Markevitch übersiedelte 1914 nach Paris und 1917 an den Genfer See (La Tour-de-Peilz). Ab 1921 erhielt Igor Klavierunterricht bei seinem Vater, der 1923 starb, anschließend bei Paul Loyonnet. Als Cortot 1925 den 13-jährigen Klavier spielen hörte, lud er ihn ein, in seiner Klasse an der École Normale de Musique in Paris zu studieren, wo Markevitch 1926–28 außerdem bei Nadia Boulanger Unterricht in Harmonielehre, Kontrapunkt und Komposition erhielt. Seine erste Komposition, die Ende 1927 auf Empfehlung Cortots im Druck erschien, war die Klaviersuite Noces (1925).
Im Dez. 1928 lernte Markevitch Sergej Diaghilew [Djagilev] kennen, der ihn mit der Komposition eines Klavierkonzerts und des Balletts L'Habit du Roi beauftragte. Letzteres blieb unvollendet, weil Diaghilew am 19. Aug. 1929 starb. Das Konzert für Klavier und Orchester wurde mit Markevitch als Solist ...
