Info for The Chaplin Project

Brothers Stochelo and Mozes Rosenberg come from one of the most talented lineages in the world of gypsy jazz. Their virtuoso playing has taken them to the biggest international stages. This year, they will perform on the festival’s main stage, accompanied by their double bassist William Brunard, to present a brand-new project paying tribute to Charlie Chaplin’s musical legacy.

In 2023, Chaplin’s son, Michael, and his granddaughters, Carmen and Dolores Chaplin, visited Stochelo and Mozes Rosenberg (of Sinti origin) at their home in Nuenen, the Netherlands, to discuss their participation in the documentary film, “The Spirit of the Tramp.” An interview with Stochelo and Mozes is included in the film, and they will also perform a song by Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin was a great composer who, in addition to numerous film scores, also composed beautiful songs.

The brothers Stochelo and Mozes Rosenberg, in consultation with the Chaplin family, released a new album in 2025 featuring Chaplin’s most beautiful songs as well as a number of their own compositions dedicated to him.

A unique musical project led by two of the world’s most phenomenal jazz guitarists

Stochelo Rosenberg
a master of the gypsy jazz genre, stands as a beacon of musical talent and innovation. Born on February 19, 1968, he is primarily renowned as a guitarist but has also garnered acclaim as a bandleader and educator, notably through his role in the celebrated Rosenberg Trio. Stochelo’s musical journey began within the vibrant world of Sinti culture, deeply influencing his soulful playing style and his commitment to the rich traditions of gypsy jazz. His performances are praised for their intricate melodies and rapid rhythms, creating an immersive listening experience. His contributions to the jazz scene have made him a key figure, attracting both dedicated jazz enthusiasts and vinyl collectors who cherish the unique sound he brings to record collections.

Growing up in a family steeped in music, Stochelo Rosenberg’s passion for the guitar was ignited at the tender age of ten. His Sinti heritage infused his formative years with rich musical influences, as the sounds of traditional Gypsy music filled his childhood home. The influence of family members playing instruments and sharing a love for music awakened a deep cultural appreciation within him. From the start, he was surrounded by inspiring musical acts that would shape his worldview and future musical aspirations. The vibrant sounds of his childhood not only laid the foundation for his career but also nurtured his love for vinyl records, which became a way to connect with his roots and celebrate the legacy of gypsy jazz.

Stochelo Rosenberg’s artistic style is a beautiful amalgamation of influences, most notably that of the legendary Django Reinhardt, arguably the godfather of gypsy jazz. Rosenberg’s formidable technique and expertise in jazz guitar are evident in his fluid improvisation and complex chord progressions, which recall Reinhardt’s signature style. Other artists, such as Stéphane Grappelli, also left an indelible mark on Stochelo’s sound, particularly through their collaborations in the 1990s. His vinyl collection reflects this admiration, featuring essential Gypsy jazz recordings that inspire his artistry. These influential sounds have shaped his approach to songwriting and performance, establishing Stochelo as a respected voice among contemporary jazz musicians.

Stochelo’s entry into the music industry was a classic tale of passion and perseverance. After forming the Rosenberg Trio with his cousins in 1989, they made a splash on the music scene by performing at the annual Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois. Their early concerts led to significant recognition, propelling them into collaborations with established artists, including a historic performance with Stéphane Grappelli at Carnegie Hall. A passion for recording soon followed, with several vinyl releases capturing the essence of Gypsy jazz. Although he faced challenges in gaining mainstream attention, Stochelo’s dedication to perfecting his craft saw him overcome industry obstacles, resulting in groundbreaking vinyl productions that would enchant listeners worldwide.

Stochelo Rosenberg’s rise to fame can largely be attributed to the success of his album *Symphonic Django – The World Première Recording*. Released in 2012, this recording showcased his virtuosity and the excitement of fusing jazz with orchestration. The vinyl release of the album garnered rave reviews, celebrated for its artistry and production quality. The album not only achieved impressive chart positions but also attracted a dedicated fan base of vinyl collectors, making it highly sought-after among enthusiasts. This success paved the way for larger tours, media recognition, and ultimately a flourishing career that continues to highlight his contribution to the genre.

Mozes Rosenberg
The younger brother of Stochelo, Mozes—born into the famous Rosenberg family—began playing the guitar at the age of six. By seven, he was already performing on Dutch television with the Rosenberg Trio. In addition to his father Mimer, his older brother Stochelo, and his uncle Waso Grünholz, Mozes draws inspiration from renowned musicians such as flamenco legend Paco de Lucía (whom he met in 1996) and American guitarist and singer George Benson.

Quickly establishing himself as an outstanding soloist, Mozes performs at prestigious international festivals—including Jazz in Marciac, North Sea Jazz, the Patrimonio Guitar Festival, Jazz sous les Pommiers, the Dutch Jazz Awards, and the Amersfoort World Jazz Festival—as well as at renowned European jazz clubs like Ronnie Scott’s and PizzaExpress in London and Le Duc des Lombards in Paris. In the spring of 2024, his schedule includes performances at the Hong Kong Jazz Marathon and the Sicilia Jazz Festival.

Constantly seeking to evolve his music, Mozes Rosenberg regularly performs with jazz guitarist Anton Goudsmit, clarinetist Giacomo Smith, violinist Jelle van Tongeren, and flamenco guitarist Rafael Cortés, as well as with his brother Stochelo, with whom he shares a "telepathic" musical rapport. As a guitarist, Mozes impresses with his virtuosity, incisive playing style, and irresistible groove. His current repertoire encompasses jazz and pop standards, his own original compositions, and Gypsy jazz classics.

Matheus Nicolaiewsky
is considered one of the finest Brazilian double bassists of his generation. Firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, his versatility and musicality—on both electric and double bass—make him a highly adaptable musician. Based in the Netherlands since 2011, where he pursued his studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and the Codarts Rotterdam Jazz Academy, Matheus has become a sought-after sideman and soloist on the European and global stages. He has collaborated with guitar greats such as Stochelo Rosenberg, Peter Bernstein, and Yotam Silberstein—with whom he recently recorded an album under his own name (*Volume 1*, released in 2025 on Pias / Bop Web Records)—and has performed internationally (across Europe, South America, and Russia) at festivals (North Sea Jazz, Jazz sur son 31, Django sur Lennon), concert halls (Jazz Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg), and clubs (Porgy & Bess, Duc des Lombards).
