Info for On the Go!
This is William PW Nilsson’s debut album. Featuring six original contemporary jazz tunes. It’s old-fashioned, traditional guitar trio jazz.
"Nilsson is incredibly nimble. At times he plays incredibly, incredibly fast, which is certainly impressive. Personally, I’m even more impressed by his timing and phrasing. It’s a dynamic and energetic style of guitar playing that seems to spill over the edge of the stage. Or the edge of the headphones, in this case. George Benson springs to mind. For a moment I think: what if someone has come along with the same energy and flair as Ulf Wakenius, but with more than just 3–4 phrases in their repertoire! Now, there isn’t quite the same furious passion in Nilsson’s playing, but there’s definitely gravitas in his expression and a broader vocabulary.
The guitar sound itself isn’t quite what I’m after. It veers a bit towards the tinny and nasal, but you get used to it. On the whole, however, I think the album has an excellent sound – no frills, but neatly recorded and mixed.
There’s nothing wrong with the songs, but I perhaps still miss the real hit potential. My favourite is the ballad Open Book, perhaps because it has a slightly more modern feel (modern in the sense that it could be 45 rather than 60 years old).
As for Hugo Löf and Jonas Bäckman, they sound excellent, as expected, and especially when Löf plays solo, you realise why he’s attracted so much attention in recent years. He’s very skilful, a bit like Scott LaFaro or NHØP. It sounds as though playing the double bass were easy." (Oscar Svenningsson, orkesterjournalen.se)
