Alles begann mit einem Missverständnis: Anfang der 1980er Jahre entdeckte Frank Zappa im New Grove Dictionary einen Eintrag über einen fast unbekannten Mailänder Komponisten des 18. Jahrhunderts namens Francesco Zappa. In der Annahme, einen Vorfahren gefunden zu haben, recherchierte er dessen Musik und widmete ihm 1984 ein ganzes Album – die erste Aufnahme von Francesco Zappas Werken seit über 200 Jahren. Dieses Missverständnis bildet den Ausgangspunkt eines Projekts von Il Pomo d’Oro. Francesco Zappas galante Musik wird mit Werken Frank Zappas für Streichquintett sowie neuen Kompositionen kombiniert. Giovanni Sollima bringt dabei seine eigene Klangwelt ein und tritt mit beiden Zappas in Dialog. Vanni Moretto, Experte für die Mailänder Musik des 18. Jahrhunderts und Bewunderer Franks, imaginiert, wie Francesco Frank Zappas Musik neu geschrieben haben könnte, und komponiert dazu eine eigene Sinfonia concertante. Sollima und Moretto wirken hier nicht nur als Komponisten, sondern stellen sich ganz in den Dienst Francesco Zappas, der in diesem Projekt neu entdeckt wird.

Giovanni Sollima
is an internationally renowned cellist and the Italian composer whose works are most performed the world.

He has collaborated with Riccardo Muti, Yo-Yo Ma, Ivan Fischer, Viktoria Mullova, Ruggero Raimondi, Mario Brunello, Kathryn Stott, Giuseppe Andaloro, Antonio Florio, Yuri Bashmet, Katia and Marielle Labeque, Giovanni Antonini, Ottavio Dantone, Patti Smith, Stefano Bollani, Paolo Fresu, Antonio Albanese and with orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Liverpool Philharmonic (Artist in Residence 2015), Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Moscow Soloists, Berlin Konzerthausorchester, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Il Giardino armonico, Cappella Neapolitana, Accademia Bizantina, Holland Baroque Society, Budapest Festival Orchestra.

He has composed music for Peter Greenaway, John Turturro, Bob Wilson, Carlos Saura, Marco Tullio Giordana, Peter Stein, Lasse Gjertsen, Anatolij Vasiliev, Karole Armitage and Carolyn Carlson.Sollima has performed at Alice Tully Hall, Knitting Factory, Carnegie Hall (New York), Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall (London), Salle Gaveau (Paris), Teatro alla Scala (Milan), Opera House (Sidney), Suntory Hall (Tokyo).

Since 2010 he has been teaching at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, where he was awarded the title of Academic. In 2012, together with Enrico Melozzi, he founded the 100 Cellos. In 2015 he composed the sound logo of Expo in Milan and inaugurated the new museum space of Michelangelo’s Pietà Rondanini. Giovanni explores different genres using ancient, oriental, electric and inventive instruments, playing in the Sahara desert, underwater, and with an Ice Cello. His discography started up in 1998 with a CD produced by Philip Glass for Point Music which was followed by eleven albums for Sony, Egea and Decca. He has brought to light the 18th century musician, Giovanni Battista Costanzi, of whom he has recorded the Sonatas and Symphonies for cello and basso continuo for the Glossa label.

In October 2018 he received the Anner Bijlsma Award at the Cello Biennale in Amsterdam.

Vanni Moretto
Chief conductor of the Orchestra Atalanta Fugiens, Vanni Moretto is also a composer and double bass/violone player, and editorial director of the series Archivio della Sinfonia Milanese published by Casa Ricordi.

He regularly conducts I Pomeriggi Musicali, I Solisti Aquilani, l’Orchestra Barocca di Siviglia,Miszla Baroque, Conductus Ensemble, Divino Sospiro, and Milano Classica. He has also conducted L’Angelicum, Musica Rara, Solisti Aquilani, La Venexiana, Orchestra nazionale dei conservatori, Il Giardino Armonico, La Cappella Teatina, Orchestra Litta, I Musici di Santa Pelagia,andGli Archi del Cherubino. He has been the regular guest conductor of the Milano Classica orchestra for eight years, recording compact discs with Dynamic.

In 2005 he founded the classical orchestra Atalanta Fugiens and initiated the project Archivio della Sinfonia Milanese to record and publish the eighteenth-century Milanese symphonic repertoire. The recordings of the project are produced as a series of the same name by Sony BMG. The scores, revised by a scientific committee (including Vanni Moretto) at the Università Statale di Milano, are published by Casa Ricordi.

As violone player Moretto has given concerts in major concert halls on all continents, including New York Carnegie Hall, Tokyo Suntori Hall, Sydney Opera House, Berlin Philharmonie, Milan Teatro alla Scala, Paris Opéra, Buenos Aires Colòn, and Rome Santa Cecilia, and recorded for Teldec, Decca, Amadeus, and others.

Moretto’s compositions, edited by Ricordi, Sonzogno, and Bèrben, have qualified in many national and international competitions (e.g. Valentino Bucchi Prize, Goffredo Petrassi contest, Rocco Rodio and Fiumara d’Arte competitions) and have been performed by major institutions such as Sentieri Selvaggi, Nederlandse Bachvereniging, Orchestra RAI di Milano, Orchestra Sinfonica della Fenice di Venezia, Orchestra dell’Accademia Chigiana, Vittorio Ghielmi’s Ensemble Sonar Parlante, Orchestra Musica Rara, Orchestra Milano ClassicaandOrchestra AtalantaFugiens. Specializing in compositions for children, he was twice consecutively awarded first prize in the competition "Il bambino e il suo strumento" in Grugliasco (1994 and 1995) and second prize in the international composition competition "Suoni di Fiaba"of Sàrmede (1994) and the Johannes Brahms competition (1994).

He has recently been concerned with studying the problems of historical tuning and Italian eighteenth-century playing technique, lecturingin importantEuropean academies,including the University of Milan, the Mozarteum Salzburg, the Conservatory of Pesaro and Novara, and the Collegio Ghislieri of Pavia.

He has organized and presided over two editions of the master course in classical instrumental practice, Oltre il Barocco.

His studies began at the age of six as a pianist and composer. At the age of fourteen he enrolled at the Conservatorio G. Verdi di Milano, attending courses in double bass, electronic music, composition, and orchestral conducting.
