Leszek Kułakowski’s latest album, ‘Poland, My Homeland’, is a deeply personal account of the present day – not in a symbolic sense, but as it is experienced in everyday life. The composer does not produce a musical manifesto, but constructs a multi-dimensional narrative in which nature, human relationships and contemporary social tensions intertwine into a single form.
Jazzfonia “Poland My Homeland” — this seven-part epic is not a compromise between jazz and classical music; it is Leszek Kułakowski’s own unique language, in which improvisation becomes a symphonic form, and the musical score breathes like a living organism, full of pulsating emotions, meticulously describing the surrounding reality. Leszek Kułakowski is an experienced composer with superb technical skill, a keen sense of form, and a stirring, narrative melody – he portrays Poland as a ‘mirror’ of the composer’s sensibility. In the music of Poland, My Homeland, the silence of nature meets the nerve of the present day, whilst lyricism constantly clashes with unease. Elaborate forms lead the listener from lyrical, focused, almost chamber-like phrases to climaxes brimming with wild tension, in which improvisation shatters the framework of classical, elegant narrative. This is not an album about Poland – it is contemporary Poland told through sound. Kułakowski’s Jazzfonia does not describe reality – it transforms it.

Leszek Kułakowski
A composer, jazz pianist, music theorist, educator, and professor at the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk. For years, he has been regarded as one of the most compelling Polish artists working at the intersection of jazz, contemporary music, and classical music. Critics describe him as a "jazz visionary" and place his work at the heart of the "Third Stream"—the concept of blending jazz with classical music.
He consistently develops his own approach to combining improvisation with expansive forms, bold harmonies, and a modern sonic language. He experiments with aleatoricism, serialism, polymodality, and polytonality, composing for ensembles ranging from chamber groups to big bands and symphony orchestras.
He has authored hundreds of jazz compositions, dozens of big-band pieces, and over twenty albums of original music. His major works include *Missa Miseri Cordis*, *Piano Concerto*, *Cello Concerto*, *Red Ice Suite*, *Sketches for Jazz Trio & Symphony Orchestra*, *Dyskretny urok konsonansów* (The Discreet Charm of Consonances), and *Eurofonia*. In recent years, he created the project *Witkacy. Narkotyki*, recorded the album *Komeda Variations*, produced the highly acclaimed album *Red Ice* with Maciej Sikała, and subsequently returned to Witkacy-inspired material with the album *Chlusty*.
He has collaborated with many distinguished musicians from the Polish and international jazz scenes, including... ...with Eddie Henderson, Ed Schuller, Peter Weniger, Christoph Titz, Tomasz Stańko, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Jan "Ptaszyn" Wróblewski, Janusz Muniak, Piotr Wojtasik, Maciej Sikała, Adam Pierończyk, and Grażyna Auguścik.
He has performed at major jazz festivals in Poland, as well as in numerous European countries and the United States. He is a three-time recipient of the Pomeranian Artistic Award and a winner of the Special Award from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage; he has also been awarded the Silver (2010) and Gold (2025) "Gloria Artis" Medal for Merit to Culture.
