Als Begleitalbum zum 2024 erschienenen Album „Flight B741“ und aufgenommen während derselben Sessions, erweitert „Phantom Island“ King Gizzard seinen Klang um ein vollwertiges Orchester auf seinen 10 Tracks. Dieses Album wird von einer Welttournee von Mai bis August 2025 begleitet! Mit der Mischung ihrer charakteristischen Psych-Rock-Energie mit mitreißenden Orchesterarrangements nehmen King Gizzard Sie mit auf eine psychologische Reise in den Geist, während sie ihre eigene „Phantominsel“ aus Illusionen, Ängsten und Chaos erschaffen. King Gizzards produktive Natur hat sie dazu gebracht, Musik in einem rasenden Tempo zu veröffentlichen, und ihr intensives Verlangen, neue Klänge zu suchen und neue kreative Wege zu beschreiten, bedeutet, dass jede ihrer zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen anders klingt als die letzte.
Die Wurzeln des Albums lassen sich bis zu einem Auftritt der Gruppe im Hollywood Bowl im Juni 2023 zurückverfolgen. King Gizzard traf einige Mitglieder der Los Angeles Philharmonic hinter der Bühne, die sie drängten, an einer jährlichen Reihe teilzunehmen, bei der das Orchester neben Rock- und Pop-Acts spielt.
Die Ergebnisse der Sessions, aus denen 2024 das für den Aria nominierte Flight b741 hervorging, brachten auch zehn weitere Songs hervor, die nicht ganz zum Vibe von Flight b741 passten und die, so Mackenzie, „schwieriger fertig zu stellen waren. Musikalisch brauchten sie ein wenig mehr Zeit, Raum und Überlegung“. Schnell kamen der Gruppe die LA Philharmoniker in den Sinn.
