Info for At First Light (Remastered 25th Anniversary Edition)

At First Light 25th Anniversary Edition: "In the spring of 2000, I was in Stockholm mixing my album, "At First Light". One morning, whilst having breakfast at the hotel, I listened to the mix of the song we’d finished the day before. The song was called Be Still My Heart. With my headphones on, and as my coffee went cold, I immediately felt that there was something very special about the song. What I didn’t realize at the time was that this song and this album would open up the world to me in a way I could never have imagined.”

The single "Be Still My Heart" became Silje Nergaard’s signature hit. The album At "First Light" was released in 2001 and launched her onto the international jazz scene. At "First Light" became her biggest success and topped the album charts in Norway. With nearly 200,000 copies sold and 40 million streams to its name, it is now being re-released in a remastered 25th-anniversary edition on 30 October, including three previously unreleased tracks.

“When we were remastering the album, we found a song from the recording session that we hadn’t included, I’ll Look For You.A cool and classy jazz track. I also found an old cassette with the original demos of the songs that I’d recorded myself in my 8-track home studio. I thought it would be nice for my listeners to hear a couple of the demo versions, and what the songs originally sounded like.”

The lyrics on the album were written by Mike McGurk , to whom Silje gives much of the credit for the songs reaching listeners all over the world. “Mike has a knack for slipping into my world of stories and finding just the right words. He’s given my songs a wider horizon.”

Since At "First Light" was first released 25 years ago, the songs from the album have been performed in all manner of musical formats – piano and vocals, big band, symphony orchestra and choir.

“These songs have taken on a life of their own. They have evolved and often transformed into something new and exciting. But it all started here on this album. And that these songs would touch so many hearts and become part of so many people’s stories – I never saw that coming.” (Silje Nergaard)

"Silje's favourite song on At First Light, "Japanese Blue", is airy and free-flowing, with the unsettling sound of a trumpet masquerading as a shakuhachi. No such instrumental illusions are used in the last track, "Lullaby to Erle", though. Recorded in Siljes house, it's folky and fairytale, reminiscent of Hushabye Mountain, and it's whispered right in your ear. Backed by Baby Erle on chimes and gurgles, and by Nils Einar Vijor on acoustic guitar, Silje's voice is all nostalgia and bliss. This one will have you pining for the fjords!" (Kathryn Shackleton, BBC, UK)
