Surely one of music’s best-kept secrets, composer and producer Snorri Hallgrímsson boasts an impressive list of credits both as a solo artist and as a collaborator on a wide variety of projects, including ‘The Chopin Project’, ‘Island Songs’, and the BAFTA-award winning score for ‘Broadchurch’ alongside Ólafur Arnalds.

Growing up in a strong Icelandic choral tradition, Snorri began his career as a classical guitarist before falling in love with film music in his teens and going on to study composition at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and at Berklee College of Music. His compositional credits include works for mixed choirs, chamber ensembles, and others, while also having worked on both short and long-form films.

Having worked extensively on collaborations for years, his debut solo album, ‘Orbit’, was released in 2018 — two years after he returned to Iceland having lived away in Spain and Mexico — and traces the journey of living in such vastly different environments. Nevertheless, it’s characterized by a healthy dose of Icelandic melancholy, fed with electronic undercurrents.

In his music, Snorri is able to find ways to balance emotion without invoking overdramatic exuberance. His string arrangements, informed by his early and continued involvement in choral singing, are deeply atmospheric — a talent that is extended to his ever-growing list of film credits.

Aufgewachsen in der traditionsreichen isländischen Chormusik, begann er seine musikalische Laufbahn als klassischer Gitarrist. In seiner Jugend entdeckte er seine Leidenschaft für Filmmusik und studierte anschließend Komposition an der Iceland Academy of the Arts sowie am Berklee College of Music.

Sein Solo-Debütalbum Orbit erschien 2018 – zwei Jahre nachdem er nach längeren Aufenthalten in Spanien und Mexiko nach Island zurückgekehrt war. Das Album spiegelt die Erfahrung des Lebens in verschiedenen Kulturen wider und vereint isländische Melancholie mit elektronischen Strömungen. Es folgte das zweiteilige EP-Projekt Landbrot I und Landbrot II (2020–2021), eine persönliche Sammlung instrumentaler Stücke für Klavier und Streicher. Im Juni 2023 erschien Snorris zweites Studioalbum I Am Weary, Don’t Let Me Rest, das bei den Icelandic Music Awards dreifach nominiert und in der Kategorie „Produktion des Jahres“ ausgezeichnet wurde.

Im Jahr 2024 unterzeichnete Hallgrímsson bei Deutsche Grammophon und veröffentlichte mit Longer Shadows, Softer Stones sein erstes Projekt über das Traditionslabel. Im Jahr 2025 folgte seine zweite EP The Importance of Birds.

Gemeinsam mit Ólafur Arnalds schrieb er die, mit dem BAFTA ausgezeichnete Musik zur Serie Broadchurch. Seine wachsende Liste an Filmscores umfasst unter anderem Jaula / The Chalk Line (2022) – vier Wochen lang der weltweit zweiterfolgreichste nicht-englischsprachige Film auf Netflix – sowie den Dokumentarfilm Innocence, der 2022 bei den Filmfestspielen von Venedig Premiere feierte und für dessen Musik der Komponist bei den Icelandic Music Awards 2025 den Preis für den besten Soundtrack erhielt. Zuletzt erschien mit Words of War (2025) der bewegende Soundtrack zum Film, der im Mai 2025 weltweit in den Kinos veröffentlicht wurde. Regie führte James Strong (Broadchurch), produziert und vertrieben wurde der Film von Sean Penns Produktionsfirma.
