Info for Verdi: Otello (2025 Remaster)

Otto Gerdes and the Chorus and Orchestra of the Bavarian State Opera sing and perform a cross-section of Giuseppe Verdi's "Othello" in German. Recorded in Munich in 1967. With Teresa Stratas, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Wolfgang Windgassen, and others.

An explosion: the curtain rises in this penultimate opera by Giuseppe Verdi, and a storm breaks out, both in the orchestra pit and in the chorus of the crowd awaiting Othello's return. This eruption of the elements is seen as a sign of the forces that will bring about the downfall of the couple at the center of the intrigue, who will become entangled in the trap cleverly laid by Iago. In this version of the drama, closely based on Shakespeare, Verdi creates arguably his most brilliant love duet, carried by a surge of infinite emotional depth bordering on ecstasy. The effects of Iago's plot are therefore all the more devastating. With a newfound expressiveness, Verdi describes Othello's heart and soul, seeing him as the great warrior, the gentle giant, and the wounded animal consumed by jealousy, blindly seeking revenge. The orchestra resembles a stream of lava flowing with powerful and fiery voices. Verdi's melodic texture thickens, captivating everything with its magic.

The action takes place on the island of Cyprus. Amidst a storm, the Moorish general Othello returns victorious from the war against the Turks to his young wife Desdemona. Barely home, he immediately falls victim to the unbridled hatred of his lieutenant, Iago. This paragon of evil is prepared to do anything to bring down his master. Step by step, he uses his position as the general's confidant to arouse his suspicions and convince him that Desdemona is cheating on him with his lieutenant, Cassio. He provides false evidence of her guilt and incites Othello's anger. Othello's jealousy consumes him, and he blindly falls into Iago's trap. Despite Othello's protestations of innocence, Desdemona is rejected in front of everyone and thrown to the ground. Othello kills her with his bare hands and must realize his error before stabbing himself.
