Info for The English Want Coup Dur (EP)

Coup Dur are a Belgian-French trio whose bright, tender pop nods to classic Yéyé while keeping one foot in sharp-edged garage rock. Based between Brussels, Strasbourg and Antwerp, the band brings together Avril De Broucker (guitar), Clémence D’Hulst (bass) and César Laloux (drums), all veterans of the contemporary European indie underground.

Their French-language songs are light on their feet and quietly barbed, pairing melodic sparkle with a wry take on modern life — doomscrolling, awkward dates and the low-level absurdities of the present moment. There’s an unmistakable affection for 60s pop craft here, reworked with an indie sensibility that keeps things playful rather than reverent.

Debut single ‘Mon Amie’ captures the band’s approach perfectly, framing the fantasy of a friendly break-up with charm, bounce and emotional understatement. It appears on The English Want … Coup Dur, an eight-song EP written over a short, intense burst and recorded swiftly in Antwerp with Rafael ‘Tuff Guac’ Valles Hilario.

The EP’s title reflects the band’s amused surprise at releasing their first record via Precious Recordings of London — a fitting home for Coup Dur’s witty, melodic take on international pop underground tradition.

Coup Dur

Coup Dur
Formed in late 2025 and based between Brussels, Strasbourg and Antwerp, Coup Dur is a Yéyé trio born after the internet. Composed of Avril De Broucker (Lavomatic) on guitar, Clémence D'Hulst (Fake Empire) on bass and César Laloux (Ada Oda) on drums.

With their sparkling, tender French songs tinged with acid romanticism and garage rock accents, the band invites us to twist in an era of doom scrolling, bad dates with egotists, basic-fit centers and online masterclasses on how to become a serial entrepreneur.

The first song composed by the band is truly emblematic of Coup Dur’s playful and effective twist-pop style, ‘Mon Amie’ is about the fantasy of a friendly break-up more than the actual reality. Coup Dur sings out loud what they dare not whisper : breaking up with a friend is often more difficult than breaking up with a lover — the boundaries are more blurred and the pact less explicit. The song evokes the desire to end a friendship that no longer suits us, while nurturing the hope of better days ahead.
