Info for Brotherly Love

Rewinding to the 1970s and zooming toward the millennium, there were no musicians on the planet more respected and revered than brothers Mike, Jeff, and Steve Porcaro. For over three decades they reigned as the royal family of groove. They created music that not only made you marvel at its sophistication, they made you feel it deep in your soul. Mike Porcaro, master of the 5-string, had a transcendental connection to his bass. He and his instrument were one. With his eyes closed and bass slung high, Mike poured his heart into every note he played, laying down rich, beautiful foundations that were as liquid-smooth as they were solid. Jeff Porcaro, the man with the golden groove, was the king of his multi-platinum class. He was the one, the only, the best of the best. Everyone wanted a piece of Jeff, and it was easy to see why. His ability to absolutely nail it in the studio was legendary, and his grooves were ridiculously deep and musical. Steve Porcaro, the wizard, the superstar of synthesis, created multi-dimensional soundscapes, textures, and quirky-cool phrases that had never been heard before. Onstage and in the studio, Steve propelled the music with vibrant colors and kinetic energy. A true original.

The influence of the Porcaro collective was immense during that period. The brothers were featured on countless magazine covers, in books, and in interviews. Much of their musical story was well publicized, studied, and appreciated. It might come as a bit of surprise, then, to learn one littleknown fact about Mike Porcaro that was revealed by Jeff during a rehearsal for Toto's Kingdom of Desire tour. 'You should hear my brother Mike play drums,' Jeff confessed. 'If Mike put a drum kit in his house and 'shedded a little, he could easily be doing sessions as pro drummer.' Coming from the most admired and recorded drummer of the era, this was quite an endorsement. Mike, the middle of the three brothers, was too busy becoming a bass legend to spend time with sticks. Most fans associate Mike with his brilliant body of work with Toto, but he had cemented his reputation as a studio and stage ace years before joining his brothers' famous band. Mike's dense discography tells the story of a young star who hit the ground running and never looked back. Tracing the Porcaro family history, you can see that the apples didn't fall far from the tree. Mike, Jeff, and Steve weren't the first of the great musical Porcaros. Leading the way, their father Joe, the patriarch, was and is one of the world's great jazz drummers and percussionists. An esteemed educator, master clinician, author, and performer, Joe graces Brotherly Love with a beautiful swing on 'Straight No Chaser' and as the composer of 'Jeff's Strut.' And today, looking ahead, a new Porcaro generation is rising. Chase Duddy, the son of sister Joleen Porcaro, also appears on Brotherly Love, and shows Jeff-like groove DNA on 'English Eyes'. Chase is but one of several talented new-breed Porcaros to embrace their musical roots; in addition, family torchbearers include Heather, Sam, Miles, and Nico Porcaro. The future looks bright. Brotherly Love, produced by David Garfield, vividly captures the Porcaro spirit in a variety of shapes, shades, and flavors. It's a treasure, especially for those of us who witnessed the amazing musical dynasty of these three brothers. (Greg Rule, Los Angeles, 6-21-11)
