Christian Zimmermann
was born in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1954. He studied the classical guitar at the Conservatory in Karlsruhe with Mario Sicca. Thereafter he devoted himself entirely to the lute studying at the Cologne Conservatory with Michael Schäffer and at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with Eugen Dombois.
During his artistic career, both as soloist (recitals) and as an ensemble performer (sacular and sacred repertoire, operas, oratories) he has mastered a style of interpretation which combines authenticity with spontaneity.
Through the use of other period instruments (Vihuela, Baroque- guitar, Chitarrone), Christian Zimmermann has been able to widen the sound spectrum needed for a historically correct and musically convincing rendering of early music. Moreover, years of practical ensemble music-making have enriched his experience in improvising, a highly significant element in the field of early music.Christian Zimmermann has broadcast on radio and television with the following companies: SWF (Südwestfunk), BR (Bayerischer Rundfunk), RAI ( Milan ). An accompanist on the lute for masterclasses and performances of historic dances with Barbara Sparti at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and the Festival Urbino.
