Info for Beyond The Wall

Valentine Michaud was the first ever saxophone soloist to perform with the Vienna Philharmonic. She and her regular collaborator, pianist Akvilė Šileikaitė, comprise the award-winning AkMi Duo. They debut on AVIE with Beyond the Wall, an album of contrasting 20th century sonatas linked by history and geography. Edison Denisov’s Soviet serialism, tinged with forbidden jazz influences, took a cue from the American modernism of William Albright.

Austro-Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff embraced avant garde and jazz idioms, leading the Nazis to brand his music “degenerate”; he perished in the Wülzburg prison camp in 1942. Paul Hindemith fell in and out of favour with the Nazis, leading him to immigrate to Switzerland and later America. His popular Saxophone Sonata is by turns lyric and dramatic, imbued with irony and humour.

Das Duo AKMI
entsteht, als sich Valentine Michaud und Akvile Sileikaite im Jahr 2015 in Zürich kennenlernen. Die Wege der jungen Saxofonistin und der dynamischen Pianistin kreuzen sich an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, an der beide einen Master in Specialized Performance absolvieren – erstere mit der Vertiefung Solistin, letztere im Fach Klavierbegleitung. Die starke menschliche und musikalische Freundschaft, die beide verbindet, findet in ihrem Enthusiasmus einen gemeinsamen Nenner.

2019 gewinnt das Duo AKMI den Swiss Ambassador Award, nachdem im Jahr 2018 den 2. Preis der prestigeträchtigen Salieri Zinetti International Chamber Music Competition in Verona, und 2016 den 1. Preis der Orpheus Swiss Chamber Music Competition erhalten hatte. Im gleichen Jahr wird den beiden jungen Frauen auch der 3. Preis des Berliner Rising Stars Grand Prix verliehen.

Das Duo ist auf den Schweizer Bühnen sowie international tätig und folgt Einladungen zahlreicher Festivals und Musikevents (KKL Luzern, Lucerne Festival, Wigmore Hall London, Festival Radio France Montpellier, Label Suisse Festival, Musikwoche Braunwald, Adelboden Chamber Music Festival, Festival autour d’un Piano, Zürich International Saxfest…).

Valentine und Akvile hegen eine regelrechte Leidenschaft für moderne und zeitgenössische Musik, die sie mit sichtlichem Genuss interpretieren. Sie pflegen daneben auch ein weitreichendes und vielseitiges Repertoire, das von Tangosonaten über Werke von litauischen bis zu amerikanischen Komponisten reicht. Beide treten außerdem solistisch auf und sind Preisträgerinnen internationaler Wettbewerbe. Die erste CD des Duo wird im 2020 erscheinen.
