Robert Jon & The Wreck have undoubtedly evolved into one of the most exciting rock bands of this era. The five friends from Orange County, California have got their feet firmly set in Southern Rock: their influences Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Black Crowes are never far away, but since their start in 2011 they have developed into much more than that; the passionate outfit offers superb melodies with heavy riffs and catchy hooks that stick, adorning their southern (hard-)rock with a whole lot of soul and Americana with Robert Jon Burrison’s rough and flexible vocals to tie it all together. It’s easy to understand why Joe Bonamassa eagerly signed the band to his Journeyman label.

Thematically their ninth full-length studio album deals with the myths and traditions linked to a red moon, symbolising rebirth and change, which is the gist of this new album.

The band fire away right from the start, going full throttle in the opener Stone Cold Killer, telling the world: We are a rock band! Henry James contributes some excellent slide. Trouble is driven on by new man Jake Abernathy’s luscious keyboard. After that the band take their foot off the accelerator for a bit in two soulful ballads, in which Robert Jon Burrison once again proves what a great singer he is. There are plenty of piercing guitars in the exuberant Down No More (with a strong Allman Brothers feel), Give Love and especially Hate To See You Go.

Dragging Me Down‘ is vintage Robert Jon & The Wreck with passionate playing and singing throughout. Hold On is true Southern Rock with powerful vocals from Robert Jon. Worried Mind is a compelling rock song with Robert Jon’s vocals at heir most soulful; there is gleeful support from ethusiastic harmony singers and a lovely harmonica. The touching Give Love, which has a beautiful piano, closes the standard album.

The album has four more, great, tracks. Led out by drummer Andrew Espantman there’s the hard rocking Rager, with even an Iron Maiden feel. The twin guitars in the intro of the second “bonus track” Hate To See You Go are amazing in the spirit of Duane and Dickey.

The two closing tracks are fine specimens of their impassioned rock solid approach which is firmly rooted in the familiar Southern rock tradition.

The guys --- lead singer and guitarist Robert Jon Burrison, lead guitarist Henry James Schneekluth, drummer Andrew Espantman, bassist Warren Murrel and keys man Jake Abernathie --- are known for their affinity for Southern Rock and they deal out plenty of it here, but on album opener "Stone Cold Killer" they show their fondness for good old classic rock, nodding a bit to AC/DC in attitude and delivery as Burrison issues an advisement about a femme fatale. More problems with a woman await in the funky "Trouble;" no doubt these two songs will resonate with fellas who've recently suffered a breakup or rough patch in their relationship and everyone else will dig them too as they are extremely catchy. Perhaps it's no surprise then that "Ballad of a Broken Hearted Man" is up next; the song plays out to a slow and swampy groove and an eeriness that evokes a distinct Lynyrd Skynyrd vibe. Title cut "Red Moon Rising" is more swampy Southern Rock with Little Feat-style funk and a chorus that, while maybe a little tricky to sing along to at first, will ultimately be a fan favorite. "Hold On" also evokes the spirit of Skynyrd and "Down No More" finds Schneekluth playing sweet guitar that many will hear as a nod to Dickey Betts. Holding it all together of course is Burrison who sings in a voice like honeyed whiskey with just enough of a rasp here and there for extra emphasis, a technique he sets aside for "Worried Mind," the album's mellowest cut. The hopeful "Give Love" ends the 10-song effort except for two appended bonus cuts: the straight-ahead rocker "Rager" and the Allman Brothers Band recalling "Hate to See You Go." Reigning from Southern California, Robert Jon & The Wreck take the Southern rock sound from the East Coast and make it their own. Since their inception in 2011, these native Californians—Robert Jon Burrison (lead vocals, guitar), Andrew Espantman (drums, background vocals), Henry James Schneekluth (lead guitar, background vocals), Warren Murrel (bass), and Jake Abernathie (keyboards)—have been electrifying audiences all over the world with their soaring guitar leads, rich vocal harmonies, and unforgettable songs. Simply put, it is impossible to ignore when these talented musicians take the stage.

The band has made an undeniable impact across the globe, playing sold-out shows and sharing the stage with the likes of Joe Bonamassa, Blackberry Smoke, Peter Frampton, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Black Crowes, Little Feat, and Rival Sons. 2020’s Last Light On The Highway earned worldwide acclaim, and 2021’s Shine A Light On Me Brother continued their upward climb, leading to a collaboration with Bonamassa’s Journeyman Records. In 2024, Robert Jon & The Wreck teamed up once again with Kevin Shirley (Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, The Black Crowes) for the release of Red Moon Rising. The record was hailed as their most fully realized work yet, with critics calling it “a bold step forward” and “a masterclass in modern rock & roll with vintage soul.” The collaboration with Shirley further cemented the band’s reputation as torchbearers of timeless, heartfelt rock music.

Now in 2025, the band continues their momentum with the release of Heartbreaks & Last Goodbyes, produced by GRAMMY-winner Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile, Rival Sons). The album captures the raw energy and spirit of the band while pushing their songwriting into bold new territory.

With the new album in tow, Robert Jon & The Wreck are set for a massive year of touring, including a major U.S. West Coast run with Samantha Fish this fall and an extensive European and U.K. tour in the spring.
