Australia rising pop chanteuse Charley releases today her highly anticipated debut album, "The Chronicles of a Serial Idealist".

Her most personal work to date, The Chronicles of a Serial Idealist captures Charley at her most honest and self-aware, exploring themes of sexuality, romanticisation and emotional growth. Across the record, she reflects on the tendency to turn red flags into rose-coloured fantasies, ultimately embracing the idea that life is ever-changing – and that letting go can be a powerful act of self-acceptance. It’s a body of work that balances emotional depth with the infectious pop energy Charley has quickly become known for.

“This album captures some of the most defining moments of my life so far, and releasing it feels equal parts exhilarating and terrifying. Where TIMEBOMBS came from trying to hold things together as they fell apart, this record is about finding hope in the mess – being honest, reflective, and learning to let go” explains Charley. “These songs circle the same patterns of romanticising and repetition, which is how I landed on the idea of a “serial idealist”. I can’t wait to share it live across Australia.”

Following recent singles ‘Cherries’ and ‘Limerence’, the album’s title track and latest single, ‘Serial Idealist’, distils the heart of the project into a confident, dreamy pop statement. Written alongside Harry Charles (Tate McRae, Reneé Rapp, King Princess) and Ned Houston (Sam Fischer), and mixed by Geoff Swan (Chappell Roan, Charli XCX), the track showcases Charley’s sharp lyrical storytelling and expansive vocal range, set against glossy, 90s-leaning pop production.

“‘Serial Idealist’ came together on a writing trip down south, in a house with a studio that opened straight onto a river. When Harry started building the track – dreamy, a little sexy – the song finally clicked. It became a reflection on choosing hope over self-protection, and falling for people who are wrong for you anyway. That same setting ended up shaping the visual world of the video, which we were lucky to bring to life exactly as imagined” says Charley.

The album arrives amid major momentum for Charley, including her recent win at the Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition, where she took out the Emerging Global Songwriter Award. Her winning track ‘Man On The Moon’ – a deeply personal moment on the record – is featured on the album’s final tracklist, further cementing Charley’s reputation as a compelling storyteller on a global stage.

Since releasing her acclaimed debut EP TIMEBOMBS in 2023 – which earned her an ARIA nomination for Michael Gudinski Breakthrough Artist and debuted on the ARIA Albums Chart – Charley has steadily cemented herself as one of Australia’s most exciting pop exports. With over 16 million combined streams and 1.5 million YouTube views, she has toured nationally to sold-out rooms, supported artists including Stephen Sanchez, G Flip, Griff and FLETCHER, and delivered standout performances at SXSW.

Her previous singles ‘Hard For Me’, ‘Arizona’ and ‘I Suck At Being Lonely’ – the latter earning a Top 4 finish at Eurovision Australia Decides 2022 – have highlighted her ability to pair vulnerability with irresistible pop hooks. In 2024, Charley was selected for a global Amazon Music Original, covering Paramore’s ‘Still Into You’, further demonstrating her versatility and vocal confidence.

Drawing inspiration from vocal powerhouses like Kelly Clarkson, Ariana Grande and Paramore, alongside contemporary peers Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan and Troye Sivan, Charley describes her sound as “yearning while crying while dancing” — a phrase that perfectly captures the emotional complexity at the heart of The Chronicles of a Serial Idealist.

The Sydney-based singer songwriter collaborated with writers in LA, Nashville, and Sweden to pen an EP’s worth of pop anthems, but she also fell in love twice. Throughout TIMEBOMBS, we listen on as Charley jumps in, out, and then back in to love with the same confidence and naivety she exhibits in her real-life relationships. Crack the glossy sheen of her high energy pop and you’ll find a deeper vulnerability and sensitivity lurking below the below the surface as she invites listeners into her world.

At its core, TIMEBOMBS is a collection of contemporary pop anthems about good old-fashioned heartbreak. Synth-soaked and power-polished, Charley croons and swoons her way through six sparkle-sad songs about everything from her bad taste in girls, to bidding goodbye to a heartbreaker masquerading as a man. On title track ‘Timebomb’, she sings, “And every time that you kiss me means you’re closer to leaving / Every second that’s gone is one second less ‘til our ticking time bomb.”

Writing and recording this EP, Charley widened her sound scope to explore “a lot more 80s stuff”, as well as crediting the angsty anthems of Paramore and the new sound of Charlie Puth—”I think when I heard that sound going around, I thought, I wanna mess with that too.” For EP closer, the country-inspired ‘Stupid Thing to Say’, we owe Maron Morris and Noah Cyrus our thanks.

Charley’s travelled to Nashville, Sweden and Los Angeles to collaborate with international writers, made her live debut supporting artists such as Stephen Sanchez, CXLOE, MAY-A and Rebecca Black, performed at events including Isol-Aid Festival, and had her debut single – ‘Hard For Me’ – attract attention on streaming, radio and online, including coveted support from Spotify, Apple Music, Side Note, NME, Pilerats, Life Without Andy and more. Most recently Charley has been awarded the AMPAL Emerging Songwriter Prize in the APRA AMCOS 2022 Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition.
