Das Weihnachtsfest wird traditionell mit besinnlicher und feierlicher Musik begangen. Auch wenn das Klavier ursprünglich nicht als sakrales Instrument galt, so gab es zahlreiche, auch namhafte Komponisten, die weihnachtliche Musik für dieses Instrument geschrieben haben. Der Pianist Peter Froundjian, Spezialist für kaum bekannte Klaviermusik und Gründer des seit 1987 alljährlich in Husum stattfindenden, international renommierten Festivals "Raritäten der Klaviermusik", hat für dieses Album aus dieser Vielzahl der Werke einige der schönsten ausgewählt: "Snöflingor" (Schneeflocken), des finnischen Komponisten Selim Palmgren (1878-1951), fängt mit impressionistischen Stilmitteln eines sanften Schneeflocken-Treibens an. Die kleine Fantasie "Drømmen om "Glade Jul"" (Der Traum von Stille Nacht) des Komponisten Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) bearbeitet die Melodie von "Stille Nacht". Busonis "Sonatine in diem Nativitatis Christi", die Weltersteinpsielungen von Ignaz Friedmans (1882-1948) "Noël" und "Pastorale" sowie die zwölf "Pastorales" von Charles Koechlin (1867-1950) sind echte Entdeckungen. Ein volksliedhafter Charakter offenbart sich in den sechs kurzen Variationen über das alte nordenglische Weihnachtslied "O Dame Get Up and Bake Your Pies" von Arnold Bax (1883-1953). Abgerundet wird das Album mit weihnachtlicher Klaviermusik vom Zyklus "Pastourelles", der aus der Feder des Franzosen und engen Debussy-Freundes Désiré-Émile Inghelbrecht (1880-1965) stammt.

Peter Froundjian
is the founder and director of the internationally renowned Rarities of Piano Music Festival. Founded in 1987, it has been described by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as “one of the world’s finest and most precious festivals”. A graduate of the Berlin School of Music, where his teachers included Gerhard Puchelt, he received additional help and encouragement from Walther Kaempfer, himself a pupil of Artur Schnabel and Gottfried Galston. In the concert hall and in radio recordings, Peter Froundjian has repeatedly championed the works of composers such as Carl Nielsen, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Karol Szymanowski, Emmanuel Chabrier and Ernest Chausson. He was one of the first pianists to record piano works by Ignacy Friedman and Rued Langgaard. He has been a regular member of the juries at national and international piano competitions such as the Carl Bechstein and Clara Haskil Competitions.
