Info for So Romantique !
"So Romantique!" illustrates the ‘profoundly sentimental’ side of French opera from the 1830s to the 1900s, which gradually came to be judged overwrought and was condemned to partial oblivion. ‘I am convinced that this is because the principals of interpretation were lost’, says the tenor Cyrille Dubois. ‘I have therefore put together this programme, which gives pride of place to rarities while highlighting the theatrical character and the use of registers so emblematic of the French ténor de grâce , in the hope of restoring this precious French heritage to its former glory.’ The sleuthing skills of the Palazzetto Bru Zane have assembled these treasures by Bizet, Gounod, Saint-Saëns, Auber, Halévy, Donizetti, Thomas and Delibes, the less well-known Godard, Dubois and Silver, and the virtually unknown Luce-Varlet and Clapisson. With the Orchestre National de Lille conducted by Pierre Dumoussaud, the French tenor deploys the full range of his artistry, the impressive high notes, the luminous tone and the graceful phrasing that is ‘so Cyrille’!

Cyrille Dubois
Considered today as one of the best French tenors of his generation, Cyrille Dubois is an insatiable artist in the discovery of new repertoire. The ductility of his tone, his mastery of nuances and his infinite musicality allow him to cover a wide spectrum of the lyrical repertoire, from the Baroque to contemporary music, including the classical period and French comic operas.
He discovered singing during his childhood in the special classes of the Maîtrise de Caen (directed by Robert Weddle). A few years later, he entered the CNSM (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique) in Paris as a tenor in Alain Buet's class, then joined the prestigious Atelier Lyrique de l'Opéra de Paris, which gave him his first opportunities to perform on stage.
This was followed by engagements on numerous opera stages in France and Europe: Scala de Milan (Les contes d'Hoffmann), Monnaie de Bruxelles (La Dispute), Opéra Zürich (Hyppolite et Aricie), Opéra de Liège (Les Pêcheurs de Perles), Théâtre des Champs-Elysées (Mitridate, Le Barbier de Séville, Point d'Orgue... ), Paris Opera (The Magic Flute, Cosi fan Tutte, Alcina, Ariadne auf Naxos, King Arthus, Les Troyens, Trompe-la-Mort...), Opéra Comique (Domino Noir, Fortunio)...
Sensitive to the transmission of the French repertoire, he frequently collaborates with the Palazzetto Bru Zane (Le Saphir, La Reine de Chypre, La Caravane du Caire, L'île du Rêve...) and the CMBV (Persée, Dardanus, Acanthe et Céphise).
But Cyrille's great passion lies in the interpretation of the Lied and the Melody of which he is a sought-after emissary. It was through contact with Anne Le Bozec and Jeff Cohen that he discovered this repertoire. With the pianist Tristan Raës he forms the Duo Contraste.
His discography includes numerous CDs, such as O lieb! devoted to Liszt's songs, Nadia and Lili Boulanger's songs, Pygmalion by Rameau with the Talens Lyriques and Christophe Rousset on Aparté, Britten's Canticles with Anne Le Bozec on NoMad, Bruneau's La nuit de Mai on Salamandre, and the rediscoveries of the Debussy centenary on Warner.
