Info for Antonín Dvořák & Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Slavonic Serenades (Remastered)
Two of the most popular string serenades: Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings is full of melodic ideas and sensual melodiousness in a Bohemian tone. Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings is a sumptuous work, a “symphony without winds“ so to speak, and combines rococo elegance with great romantic gesture.
The scores for piano four hands of Dvorak's two Serenades were great publishing successes, as much as the famous Slavonic Dances. On the contrary, Jurgensen did not reach the same issue with his reduction of the Op. 48 by Tchaikovsky. The composer wrote to Jurgensen "I am madly in love with this serenade...", maybe recognising himself in this piece, a summary of his art, a combination of choreographic grace and of atavistic melancholy linked by an imaginary Russian style, everything being purified by the use of a classical model, borrowed from Mozart according to the composer himself.
