Info for Departure
Brit Steve Folk is one of the rare breed of songwriters who hide or conceal nothing. His songs, beautifully crafted paeans to the trials and tribulations of life, are always delivered with unflinching honesty. Folk in name, "folk" in essence, for what runs through these 11 thoughtful vignettes is the rare ability to describe personal matters of the heart while conveying everyday themes and universal sentiments to the listener - without passing (judgment).
With "Departure," Folk's fifth album, the houseboat-living songwriter and emerging artist delivers an enchanting album and undoubtedly a high point in his career. On this album, Steve Folk presents songs from his past and some brand new recordings.
A troubadour in the truest sense of the word, Folk has toured mainland Europe time and again in recent years, where he has become a very popular artist on the house concert scene. With his dry, blunt manner and outspoken demeanor, he has made many friends among a growing audience of music lovers.
Steve Folk aka Steve Thompson
studied Fine Art at Middlesex University in the early 90s. He practised conceptual painting and performance over his 3 years of residence, and graduated with a second class honours degree.
Post grad, he became involved in many artist-led group shows around Shoreditch, the hot spot of London for underground Art and Performance.
His work led him into the world of Graphic Design within the advertising sector and his own artistic endeavours took a back seat as his career led him into various roles in the field for 15 years.
Songwriting became something of a release for Steve whilst working in various design companies. It was this pursuit that led Steve out of the office and onto the stages of London and the UK. He enjoyed many years of playing festivals and recording albums for a small record company that had faith in his music.
Over the last 5 years Steve, has found himself in the welcoming arms of Mainland Europe and has become a very popular Singer/Songwriter within the House Concert scene in Germany, as well as a regular returning performer in Italy, Switzerland, Holland and Spain.
2 years ago Steve began painting again with a relentless and passionate vigour and has since sold over 100 works across the globe. Last year Steve had his first solo exhibition in Kultur Im Kontor, a centre for arts and music in Wuppertal. He also takes his watercolours with him to every show in Germany, offering his audiences a further experience in the opportunity to view and purchase his work. Steve has produced many commissions and, through the use of social media, has become a celebrated painter amongst a modest circle of friends and followers.
Last year, Steve took up an invitation for a short residency at the Great Art store in Shoreditch, during which he engaged with visitors while painting one of his works. He would later sell this work at a house concert in Germany.
