Info for Karfunkel - Live at SRF Studio

An idea, a ray of light, a moment. Grab happiness when it sparkles. According to an Appenzell legend, a Karfunkel is a gemstone hidden in a river called Brüelbach. It can only be found if you are not looking for it…In one way or another, a handful of songs found their way to Gabriela Krapf in a “mythical” way. With her fellow musicians, Christian Rösli (piano/synth.), André Pousaz (double bass) and Christian Niederer (drums), they had the opportunity to record these pieces in a public recording session at SRF Kultur. At the Auditorium Studio Basel, an EP with six pieces including two videos was recorded live in the presence of an interested audience. As usual, Krapf moves between jazz and pop. This time with an increased focus on groove and improvisation.

Gabriela Krapf
Raised in Speicher in Appenzell-Ausserrhoden, Gabriela Krapf studied jazz vocals in Vienna and Amsterdam after graduating from high school. Following her master's degree, she moved to Zurich and continued her Amsterdam-founded band Lobith with a Swiss lineup, releasing the albums "Five Feet Underground," "Panorama," and "Sunday Land." Eventually, she moved to Winterthur to be with her husband, musician Ernst David Hangartner, where they founded the indie-pop duo The Homestories and toured both nationally and internationally. With Gabriela Krapf and Horns, she played piano and vocals, performing alongside three wind players. "Later, we expanded the quartet to a septet with a rhythm section," she explains. In addition to her work as a singer and pianist, she hosted her own radio show, "Blumenpflücken" (Pickling Flowers), on Radio Stadtfilter until 2014, where she chatted with musical guests from all over Switzerland about their work. She can also occasionally be heard on Radio SRF 2 Kultur's "Jazz Collection" program, where she discusses music from genre boundaries as an expert.

Another project was SchnozJennyCaflisch feat. Gabriela Krapf, in which she interpreted Björk songs as a quartet: "Our approach is simple: We change the songs so that the essence remains, and when you listen, you think: 'Hmmm... that sounds somehow familiar' – and only after a while do you realize that it's a Björk song."

Gabriela Krapf (Speicher (AR), Switzerland) studied voice at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and at the AIM in Vienna. In 2000, she returned to Switzerland and has since worked with many different groups and musicians in a wide variety of styles, from pop and folk to jazz. Since 2002, she has taught singing at the Zurich Conservatory of Music, where she also leads a songwriting workshop.
