Info for Latin American Piano Music

On his new album Colombian-born pianist Pablo Rojas presents piano music from five Latin-American countries. These diverting pieces tell of the history of South America, Spanish and Portuguese reign and the incorporation of Indigenous and African culture. Adding to works by the popular Ginastera and Piazzolla, Rojas discloses a world of gems by lesser known composer like Luis Calvo, Ernesto Nazareth, Ernesto Lecuona, Ignacio Cervantes, Carlos Vieco, Horacio Salgan or Gerry Weil. They stand for a wonderful mixture of most diverse influences and styles and reflect folklore from the Andes and Argentinian tango as well as dances and waltzes from Cuba, Colombia and Brasil, while at the same time roaming the border to jazz.

Pablo Andrés Rojas De Los Ríos, who was born in Pasto, Colombia, completed his piano studies at the Universidad de Antioquia (Colombia), where he graduated with distinction. Pablo came to Vienna in order to study piano pedagogy at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst under Professors Carlos Rivera, Harald Ossberger and Michael Lipp.

Pablo has performed as a soloist with the Symphonic Orchestra of Colombia, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bogotá, the Symphonic Orchestra of Barranquilla (Colombia), the Philharmonic Orchestra of Medellín (Colombia), and the Symphonic Orchestra of Yucatán (Mexico). As an orchestral musician Pablo has played with, among others, the Tonkünstler Orchester Niederösterreich. In the season 2015/16 he worked as a theatre musician in the Volkstheater in Vienna.

In 1997 and 1999 Pablo won second prize in the National Colombian Piano Competition, organised by the Universidad Industrial de Santander. In 2009 and 2012 he was invited to this competition as a jury member and head of the master classes.He teaches at the music school in Waidhofen an der Ybbs and, since 2013, at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna.

As well as classical music Pablo also devotes himself to folklore and the popular rhythms of his culture of origin for instance in the duo Barembuem-Rojas, which explores the essence of the Argentinean tango as folk music. In 2009 this duo released their first album -"Volver" (Spanish: to return) - with a number of their own sensitive arrangements under the label REChord Sounds, Vienna.

geboren in Kolumbien, schloss sein Klavierstudium an der Universidad de Antioquia mit Auszeichnung ab. Nach Wien kam Pablo, um an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Klavierpädagogik bei den Professoren Carlos Rivera, Harald Ossberger und Michael Lipp zu studieren. Dieses Studium schloss er als Mag. art. im November 2005 ab. Ab 2013 ist Pablo als Lehrender an dieser Universität tätig.

"Aus dem Konzertsaal“. Als Solist trat Pablo bereits mit dem Symphonischen Orchester Kolumbiens, Dem Philharmonischen Orchester von Bogotá, dem Symphonischen Orchester von Barranquilla (Kolumbien), dem Philharmonischen Orchester von Medellín (Kolumbien) sowie dem Symphonischen Orchester von Yucatán (Mexiko) auf. Im Rahmen der Internationalen Musikfestivals von Popayán und Bucaramanga (Kolumbien) wirkte Pablo als Kammermusiker und Solist mit. Bei der DECASIA Produktion im Mai 2006 spielte er im Festspielhaus St. Pölten mit dem Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich. 1997 und 1999 war Pablo der zweite Preisträger beim Nationalen Kolumbianischen Klavierwettbewerb. 2009 und 2012 wurde er zu diesem Wettbewerb als Jurymitglied eingeladen.

"Abseits der Klassik - mi música latina“. Seit seinem Studium ist es Pablo ein Anliegen, Konzerte mit Werken lateinamerikanischer Komponisten in Kolumbien und Österreich zu gestalten. Neben der klassischen Musik Lateinamerikas widmet sich Pablo auch umfassend der Folklore und den populären Rhythmen seiner Ursprungskultur.

So gründete Pablo im Jahr 2007 mit der argentinischen Sängerin Paula Barembuem das Duo Barembuem-Rojas, das sich ganz der Essenz des argentinischen Tangos als Volksmusik verschrieben hat. Es folgten regelmäßige Konzerte und Auftritte bei Festivals im In- und Ausland, bis Pablo und Paula 2009 ihr erstes Album -"Volver" (span. zurück kehren) - mit eigenen einfühlsamen Arrangements unter dem Label Wendezeit herausbrachten.

Eine zweite Tango CD nahm Pablo mit dem Tango Quartett Chamuyo im Jahr 2007 auf. Seine Vielseitigkeit stellt Pablo auch in der Latin Branche unter Beweis. Seit 2003 spielt er regelmäßig bei Konzerten, Festivals und Auftritten der Latinbands José Ritmo & Cacao, Carla Natascha & Band u.a.

Chanson und so weiter ... Pablo befasst sich seit 2007 auch mit dem chanson français, u.a. als Begleiter der französischen Sängerin Monique d´Agorne. Im Rahmen ihrer CD Produktion wirkt Pablo als Arrangeur und Pianist mit. Außerdem tritt Pablo als Klavierbegleiter u.a. bei Theaterproduktionen (Theater L.E.O., Theater Akzent) auf.

Pablo freut sich, seit 2007 als Lehrender an der Musikschule Waidhofen an der Ybbs und seit 2013 an der Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Wien mitzuarbeiten.
