We’ve been following the fruitful collaboration between Julien Auroux and Boris Guffer. A series of singles in the vein of a deconstructed new wave, somewhere between a slowed-down version of Young Gods and cerebral electro-rock. The duo are back with a debut album that expands on this world, straddling the boundaries of obscure poetry and deep, dreamy music.

‘Chroniques’ carries fragments of sound and finely crafted lyrics that speak of love and emptiness. With an almost narcotic slowness, the album – much like the works of Tricky – cultivates a toxic nonchalance; a bizarre beauty that intoxicates.

‘Chroniques’ is enriched by almost pop-like atmospheres, which soften its darkness and its hermetic quality. The album proves accessible, despite its obvious avant-gardism. With songs that effortlessly stick in the mind and set an alluring rhythm.

Hypnotic and sensual, ‘Chroniques’ leaves behind the confines of music fixated on experimentation and sails towards the light. ‘Une Visite’, which closes the album, is, for example, superbly compelling. A stunning refrain, it symbolises the album’s atmosphere, which is both soothing and unsettling – all at once.
