Info for Hungarian String Trios
This recording brings together four Hungarian composers who, each in their own way, contributed to the development of a new national musical style at the beginning of the twentieth century. They managed to write music that was respected internationally and that both nurtured them and raised the general standard of music in Hungary. Although Leó Weiner's (the 'Hungarian Mendelssohn'), and Ernő Dohnányi's string trios were composed during their student years, both works have become significant milestones in the restricted repertoire for this instrumental combination. Elegant and sometimes reminiscent of Brahms, they also feature subtle touches of local folklore.
Zoltán Kodály, along with Béla Bartók one of the most important Hungarian musicians of the century, composed little chamber music but his Intermezzo, also an early work, is reminiscent of the folk music that the composer had begun to collect for his ethnomusicological research.
The least familiar and youngest of the composers represented here, László Weiner, suffered a tragic fate. His Serenade, composed while he was studying with Kodály, reveals the exceptional talent of a composer whose œuvre is too small. Less 'Magyar' than the other works presented here, his Serenade is reminiscent of the intense and concentrated atmosphere of Viennese 'modernist' works.

Trio Boccherini
The Trio Boccherini
was formed in 2014 as a result of various evening sightreading sessions that frequent the Berlin music scene. Today they are recognized as one of the most dynamic groups of this constellation. Suyeon Kang, violin, Vicki Powell, viola, and Paolo Bonomini, cello are dedicated to rediscovering and performing the veritable treasure trove of over five hundred works written for string trio. Although it boasts some of the greatest masterpieces, it includes many works that, unfortunately, are neglected and unknown to the public. In doing so, they endeavor to continually develop an honest, original and unified perception across all musical genres.
Natives of three different continents, each member contributes various aspects of their diverse musical upbringings. This colorful array of musical vocabulary and expression, in amalgamation with their shared European training, culminates in their unique and raw
interpretations.
The trio received important musical impulses from Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet), Hatto Beyerle, Günter Pichler (Alban Berg Quartet), and Johannes Meissl, and they are an alumnus of the European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA, Austria). Their international concert activity includes appearances at Wigmore Hall, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the BachArchiv Leipzig, MITO SettembreMusica, the Flanders Festival Ghent and the Canberra International Music Festival. As individuals, they are highly in demand as chamber musicians and are also internationally active as soloists, orchestral leaders and pedagogues.
The Trio plays on a set of old Italian instruments courtesy of the Fondation Boubo Music (Switzerland): a violin by Nicola Amati, a viola by Michele Deconet and a cello by Andrea Guarneri. Additionally, Suyeon Kang plays on a modern violin built by Julia Maria Pasch, and Vicki Powell plays on a viola by Samuel Zygmuntowicz.
