Info for Appels
Mirai Sumino’s debut album, "Appels", is an ambitious collection centered on works by the masters of modern French music—Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel—alongside "Femmes de légende" ("Legendary Women") by Mel Bonis, a female composer who was a contemporary of theirs but remained long overlooked. The program offers a fresh perspective on French music from the "Belle Époque" era, allowing listeners to fully appreciate the resonant, interconnected charms of these three artists.
This release also marks the inaugural project for "Appels," a new record label founded by Mirai Sumino. The name "Appels"—French for "calls" or "invitations"—perfectly captures the essence of the album, which invites listeners to discover forgotten masterpieces and encounter new musical treasures.
Mel Bonis (1858–1937) was a French composer who produced over 300 works. Although her immense talent was recognized during her studies alongside Debussy at the Paris Conservatory, the social constraints of her time prevented her from receiving the acclaim she deserved. "Femmes de légende" is a collection of piano pieces depicting seven women from literature, mythology, and the Bible. While it is now understood that this title was assigned by the publisher rather than the composer herself, the pieces share a cohesive thematic thread; through Bonis’s rich harmonic sensibility and exceptional descriptive power, a diverse array of female figures is brought vividly to life.
The latter half of the album features masterpieces by Debussy (1862–1918) and Ravel (1875–1937). Characterized by their imaginative quality, vivid color, and technical brilliance, these works resonate with the music of Bonis, illuminating the rich, multifaceted world of French art from that era.
