As a symphonist, British composer, pianist, conductor, and educator Philip Cipriani Hambly Potter is at the height of his powers. He makes use of an opulent orchestra, drawing colors from its palette with strikingly boyish strokes: Where just a moment ago the heavy brass was steering through the surf, the next moment delicate flutes and tender strings sound, suddenly marching through dreamy scenes with heavy footwear, and when it comes to bringing the works to an applauded conclusion, everyone involved has to push themselves to the limits of their endurance ... This attitude is as fascinating as it is entertaining – just the right balance between symphonic seriousness and nonchalant playfulness, a welcome facet of early Romantic literature, like the lively concert piece that tastefully separates the two symphonies.
