With "A Wonderful Life", his seventh studio album, he has now created a work that is more than just music: a stark assessment by an artist who finds liberation through writing – and, at the same time, a quiet embrace for a world in a state of perpetual crisis.

The album was created over nine intense months, on buses, trains and planes – wherever the 34-year-old found himself between tour dates and moments of solitude. “I honed the lyrics every day, over and over again. It was like an obsession,” says Odell. This obsession is evident in the precision of his songs: at times tenderly whispered, at times painfully direct, often both at once.

“A Wonderful Life” is permeated by a sense of loss of control. World news flickers like an apocalyptic endless loop, in which hope and powerlessness alternate. Odell channels this unease into tracks such as “Don’t Let Me Go”, which stirs the listener with lines about social media dystopia and the emotional void of the digital age: “You smile and look down at your phone / The city is filling with smoke”. In “Why Do I Always Want The Things I Can’t Have”, he takes responsibility: not as an accuser, but as part of a system that he himself helps to shape.

And then there’s “Ugly” – a song that cuts deep. “You don’t wanna touch me / Don’t wanna fuck me / ‘Cause I’m ugly.” Hardly any other artist with such a wide reach would dare to sing so ruthlessly about their own body and feelings of shame. But Odell does. Because it needs to be said. Because, as he puts it, it’s “fucking powerful” when you stop hiding.

Yet the music is never merely sombre. There is comfort between the lines. In the title track, for instance, Odell seeks beauty in the everyday, tranquillity amidst the chaos. ‘Prayer’, on the other hand, feels like a tender conversation with his childhood self – an act of reconciliation.

Odell’s voice – fragile, intimate, almost confiding – carries it all. Supported by a production that deliberately eschews perfectionism: recorded live, with the intentional ‘bleed’ of the instruments that creates closeness rather than distance. This warmth makes the album a counterpoint to the coldness of world events.

The fact that Odell is now a global star, with over 14 billion streams and 31 million monthly listeners, plays only a marginal role in his art. He is concerned with something else: connection, the sharing of pain – and ultimately, as he says, the attempt to “alleviate the loneliness of existence a little”.
