Info for Curves

Initiated by Geneva-based drummer and composer Noé Tavelli—who trained at the HEMU in Lausanne and subsequently at the Manhattan School of Music in New York—this new project stems from a desire to explore, without restraint, the possibilities offered by an unconventional instrumentation: two drum kits, a double bass, and a saxophone. As an international endeavor, the ensemble brings together two generations of musicians. On one hand, it features two major figures from the New York jazz scene: drummer Eric McPherson (known for his work with Pharoah Sanders, Andrew Hill, and Greg Osby) and saxophonist and composer Ohad Talmor (who has collaborated with Lee Konitz, Fred Hersch, and Carla Bley). On the other, it includes two prominent representatives of the contemporary Swiss scene: double bassist Fabien Iannone (who has played with Dan Weiss, Malcolm Braff, and Guillaume Perret) and Noé Tavelli himself (who has worked with Dave Liebman, Nat Su, and Dee Dee Bridgewater). Their original music draws from the jazz tradition, as well as from Afro-Cuban rhythms and influences from electronic music. Through this intergenerational encounter, the project highlights two essential dimensions of jazz: its constant capacity for reinvention and the transmission of a living body of knowledge, passed down from one musician to another across generations.
