Info for Gregor Joseph Werner: Salve Reginas & Pastorellas

Expressiveness, drama and Alpine joie de vivre: the hitherto neglected œuvre of Haydn’s predecessor Gregor Joseph Werner reveals a wealth of contrasts. Connecting different epochs to each other, his compositions are musical jewels casting a new light on the works of the Viennese classical era.

Following on from their highly successful debut album featuring works by Venturini (aud. 97.775), la festa musicale now make a welcome return to audite, once again performing little-known and yet high-quality repertoire:

Gregor Joseph Werner (1693-1766), a titan at the birth of Viennese classicism, was Joseph Haydn's immediate predecessor as Kapellmeister at the Esterházy court. First and foremost a pre-eminent composer of Latin sacred music, the majority of his instrumental music has been lost. Werner's compositions, including the Salve Regina settings and Pastorellas presented here, reveal beguiling and inventive melodic lines and a bold sense of harmonic expression alongside enormous contrapuntal prowess. Haydn profited considerably from his predecessor and teacher: the late Mozartian synthesis of the "learned" and the "galant" styles was clearly already inherent in Werner's music. Werner's oeuvre, difficult to access and almost only available in individual parts, has been researched for decades by Lajos Rovatkay, who is also the conductor in these performances. Together with a stellar cast of soloists and la festa musicale, he now presents impressive interpretations of the works of this unjustly neglected master.

la festa musicale
... is a baroque ensemble from northern Germany. Since it was founded in 2014, the young chamber orchestra has swiftly made a name for itself through its passion, stylistic accuracy and virtuosity. High motivation and the first-class artistic niveau of all its musicians are characteristic of the ensemble: they are charismatic representatives of a new generation of historical performance practice. The concert programmes Bach|brand new!, ITALIA! (in which all orchestra members introduce themselves as soloists) and BiberITransformations are paramount examples of this quality. The artistic direction is in the hands of the ensemble's concert master, Anne Marie Harer.

The ensemble has performed with internationally renowned soloists including Anna Dennis, Peter Kooij, Monika Mauch, Klaus Mertens, Alex Potter, Hélène Schmitt, Andreas Scholl and Zachary Wilder. la festa musicale has cooperated on projects with the Johann Rosenmüller Ensemble, the Knabenchor Hannover and many others. In 2016, la festa musicale made its debut at the Festival Alte Musik Knechtsteden. The ensemble has made several guest appearances as part of the Festwoche des Forum Agostino Steffani as well as at the Niedersächsische Musiktage, making its debut at the Schleswig Holstein Musikfestival in 2018.

Concerts performed by la festa musicale have been recorded by German Radio and North German Radio. Two CDs have been recorded by Rondeau Production along with the Kammerchor Hannover featuring works by J.S. Bach and S.-D. Sandström. 2018 saw a recording with the same label of works for choir and orchestra by Diogenio Bigaglia and Antonio Lotti, sung by the Knabenchor Hannover.

la festa musicale is committed to passing on its own unique enthusiasm for early music to diverse and inquisitive audiences. It is particularly interested in the creation of its own programmes and performance formats. Family and children's concerts such as “Locatelli or the Eavesdropping Magnifying Glass”, programmes narrated by the ensemble itself as well as music education projects in primary schools and refugee accommodation bring performers and listeners together: a festival of clapping, singing and dancing!

»la festa musicale is a young and very likeable baroque ensemble. [...] Rarely have I experienced this combination of immense passion, precision and spontaneity. My compliments!« Andreas Scholl, Countertenor (2016)
