Info for Nuit à Venise
Venice was surely the capital of music and the arts in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and one of the most coveted positions in the city was that of maestro di cappella at St Mark’s Basilica.
A few lucky chosen candidates succeeded one another in bringing to life the musical splendour of the basilica, all of them fabulous musicians and composers prolonging the legacy of the great Claudio Monteverdi.
For its third recording on Alpha, the ensemble Les Surprises has chosen to sail towards Venetian waters and mix with these geniuses of affect, word-setting and theatre, exploring music that ranges from grandiose double choruses to intimate duets or trios combining sacred and profane.

Ensemble Les Surprises
Founded in 2010 by Juliette Guignard and Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas, the ensemble Les Surprises seeks to convey its passion for the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries through varied and original programmes. In borrowing its name from the opéra-ballet by Jean-Philippe Rameau Les Surprises de l’Amour, the group has placed its destiny under the lucky star of this composer, with the aim of exploring operatic music in all its shapes and forms! Les Surprises is an ensemble of varying size, which can metamorphose from a chamber group to one of orchestral dimensions. Its members were all trained at leading European conservatories. In 2014 Les Surprises won the ‘Révélation musicale’ (new discovery) prize awarded by the French critics’ circle for the performing arts. Since its foundation, it has appeared in numerous concert halls and festivals, including the Versailles Chapelle Royale, the Opéra de Massy, the Radio France and Ambronay festivals, the Sanssouci Festival (Potsdam, Germany), the Bozar season (Brussels), and in Monaco, Palestine and Italy.
Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas
(b. 1989) studied organ, harpsichord, chamber music and conducting at the Paris and Lyon Conservatoires (CNSMD) and won rst prizes at three international organ competitions: the Grand Prix Jean-Louis Florentz (2009), the Gottfried Silbermann Competition (Freiberg, Germany) in 2011 and the Xavier Darasse Competition (Toulouse, 2013). He works with such conductors as Hervé Niquet, Arie van Beek and Paul Agnew, and has appeared as a soloist in France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. In 2014 he received the Déclics Jeunes scholarship of the Fondation de France. Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas is artist in residence at the Fondation Royaumont.
