Info for n. hemisphere

Singer/songwriter and producer Garrett Kato shares new song “Permanently” from his upcoming EP n. hemisphere, out August 28th via Nettwerk. The track explores a different musical side to the troubadour with melodies that float between Folk and LoFi R&B.

Garrett explains, “I was on tour in Europe for the first time with Canadian friends ‘Jon & Roy,’ and our tour manager, JP, was from Berlin. He loved underground Berlin Deep House music and played it most of the tour. I started to really like the hypnotic beats and melodies that were used, so I used a type of LoFi feel to inspire the sonic landscape of ‘Permanently.’” He adds, "The production was inspired by a wide range of artists, from Frank Ocean’s ‘Blonde’ to Ray LaMontagne’s ‘Trouble.’”

n. hemisphere is the sister EP to his March 2020 release, s. hemisphere, which featured stand out tracks “Breathe It In (feat. Julia Stone)” and “Holding on to You.” His journey across both hemispheres as an artist, producer, and eventually husband and father, wraps both of these halves together in one musical odyssey blanketed by a patchwork of folk, indie, alternative, pop and rock.

Garrett explains how the two EPs relate: “For the first part, s. hemisphere chronicles me relocating to Australia from Canada and eventually getting married, becoming a dad, and settling down. On the other end of the spectrum, n. hemisphere reminisces on my life in Canada before the eventual rebirth. There are moments of longing to go back to North America. I’m discussing those little things anybody who moves away from home feels. I view this as an album in two separate parts with a fully realized idea.”

In addition to the EP news, Garrett recently announced an upcoming UK and Europe tour with Pierce Brothers in January/February 2021. The news comes following Garrett signing with London-based Paul Boswell at Free Trade Agency earlier in 2020. For more information and list of dates, visit www.garrettkatomusic.com.

Garrett traded Canada for Byron Bay in 2010, planting roots after years of nomadic living. By 2020, he generated upwards of 40 million worldwide streams and performed sold-out shows alongside Damien Rice and Ziggy Alberts. He landed syncs in blockbusters like Bad Moms as “Take It Slowly” exceeded 12.8 million Spotify streams. His 2019 EP, Distant Land, earned the endorsement of Triple J and Beatroute Magazine as the title track eclipsed 2.7 million Spotify streams. He also cemented himself as an in-demand producer, working with the aforementioned Ziggy Alberts on his 2016 EP Four Feet in the Forest (certified Platinum in Aus) and his 2018 album Laps Around the Sun (certified Platinum in Aus), as well as releases from Kyle Lionheart, Pete Murray, Pierce Brothers, and more. Creating out of his personal studio, he crafted these two EPs.

The Canadian-born, Byron Bay local singer-songwriter & producer Garrett Kato creates out of his personal studio and utilizes it as an as an ever-evolving canvas.

Garrett quietly went from busking and living out of a backpack to tallying over 39 million worldwide streams and performing sold-out shows alongside Damien Rice and Ziggy Alberts.

He landed syncs in Hollywood blockbusters like Bad Moms as “Take It Slowly” surpassed 12.4 million Spotify streams. His 2019 EP, Distant Land, earned the endorsement of Triple J and Beatroute Magazine as the title track eclipsed 2.5 million Spotify streams. At the same time, he cemented himself as an in-demand producer, working with Ziggy Alberts on his 2016 EP Four Feet in the Forest (certified Platinum in Aus) and his 2018 album Laps Around the Sun (certified Platinum in Aus), as well as releases from Kyle Lionheart, Pete Murray, Riley Pearce, Pierce Brothers, and more. As he took stock of his journey during 2019, he set about on the next chapter. Putting together new music, he reflected on where he had been. This process and the space ultimately gave birth to a pair of EPs; s. hemisphere and n. hemisphere.

“I most definitely look at these songs as paintings,” he affirms. “It’s totally a mad scientist situation. I blend sounds together in order to aesthetically serve the song. The writing, engineering, and producing are all married. I’ll tinker with a track for two months. I look at it, walk away, and come back as if I were leaving a painting on a canvas. The chords, melodies, and moods are like images to me. I don’t use instruments for genre, but rather for frequencies, tones, and cadences. Getting the chance to see different parts of the world and hear so many stories inspired some of the insights and colours I wanted to use.”
