From Another World is more than an album title: it’s an invitation to travel across centuries, continents, and emotions. At its heart lies an encounter between two musical traditions: the elegance and architecture of European classical music and the expressive pulse of Argentine tango. Bridging these worlds is Guttman Tango Quintet, formed by musicians who draw naturally from both traditions under the direction of violinist Michael Guttman. In From Another World, tango is not nostalgia. It is evolution. Just as Astor Piazzolla once liberated tango from the dance hall into the concert hall, Guttman dialogues with the classics that shaped Western music. Each track on this album begins with a familiar theme (Beethoven, Mozart, Mahler, Dvořák, and others) and lets it wander into Buenos Aires. What emerges is neither parody nor pastiche, but a transformation. Recorded in January 2025 at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, this debut album captures a moment of creative alchemy, an ensemble of classical virtuosos surrendering to the irresistible gravity of tango.

The Michael Guttman Tango Quintet
Led by Grammy-nominated violinist Michael Guttman, THE GUTTMAN TANGO QUINTET brings together world-class classical virtuosity and the expressive intensity of Argentine tango. Internationally acclaimed as a violinist, conductor, and artistic director of major festivals, Guttman has shared the stage with legendary artists including Martha Argerich, Elena Bashkirova, Vadim Repin, Antoine Tamestit, and Maxim Vengerov.

Behind this distinguished classical career lies another lifelong passion: tango. In the late 1980s, a personal encounter with legendary Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla profoundly shaped Guttman’s artistic vision and inspired the creation of THE GUTTMAN TANGO QUINTET.

To pursue Piazzolla’s spirit of innovation, Guttman assembled some of Europe’s leading tango specialists: Franco-Chilean bandoneonist Lysandre Donoso, Belgian pianist Ivo De Greef, Belgian cellist Stijn Kuppens, and Argentine double bassist Ariel Eberstein. Together, these musicians have performed at prestigious international festivals including Pietrasanta in Concerto, Odesa Classics, Crans-Montana Classics, the POLIN Music Festival, the Trans-Siberian Art Festival, Paris Printemps du Violon, and the Corfu and Patmos International Music Festivals. A major highlight was the ensemble’s invitation by Martha Argerich to perform at her festival in Hamburg’s Laeiszhalle, documented on the acclaimed 7-CD release Rendez-Vous With Martha Argerich (Avanti Classic).
