Debut albums are meant to captivate the listener and turn them into a fan. Royal Tusk, a Canadian rock 'n' roll band, will certainly pull off this feat with their elegant debut album, *DealBreaker*.

A blend of classic-sounding, anthemic choruses, modern production, and inventive riffs makes the album a real treat for the ears. Perhaps the only criticism one could level at the album—if one views it as a criticism at all—is that it rarely ventures beyond the boundaries of the "rock" genre. Yet, within the limits the band set for itself, there is plenty of room for discovery; almost every song boasts a unique sound compared to the next. A groovy track like "Don’t Get Me Wrong" is sonically worlds apart from the laid-back "Dynamo" and the multifaceted journey that is "Cold On Me."

Royal Tusk deserves great praise for having the courage to incorporate guitar solos into their music. Bands generally shy away from solos these days—possibly for fear that "radio won't accept them anymore"—but fortunately, these musicians have tossed that new rulebook right out the window of their speeding car, *DealBreaker*. Pay special attention to Ian Thornley of Big Wreck, who delivers a monster solo on "So Long The Build Up."

Furthermore, the layering of the songs is quite impressive. Each instrument weaves into a cohesive whole while remaining distinct enough to be heard and appreciated individually. Additional sounds also contribute to creating well-rounded tracks, with tambourines and a host of effects used skillfully throughout.

The band has crafted a debut album that will not only draw attention to them but also inject new life into the rock genre, which has become somewhat stale of late. The album isn't just a rehash of old elements, yet it isn't so far-out that it becomes inaccessible to listeners. Royal Tusk have struck the perfect sonic balance, meaning there is a strong chance *DealBreaker* will stand the test of time.

Royal Tusk
is a Canadian rock band out of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The band features Daniel Carriere on vocals and rhythm guitar, Quinn Cyrankiewicz on lead guitar, Sandy MacKinnon on bass, and Calen Stuckel on drums. Their sound features strong guitar riffs, memorable hooks, heavy bass and drum groove, all topped off with strong lyrics and imagery from their lead singer, Daniel. ​

In 2011, when Sandy MacKinnon and Daniel Carriere left Ten Second Epic, they formed this band and soon evolved from Alt Rock into their current flavorful amalgum of sound. They band initially recorded an EP in Edmonton in 2014, released by the Canadian Independent label of Hidden Pony Records; with the single, Shadow of Love getting local radio airplay. Following this, in 2016 Deal Breaker was released and the singles, Fever and Curse the Weather were popular. ​

Their sophomore album from 2018,Tusk II, features the single, Aftermath, which has peaked at #36 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Charts. Royal Tusk is currently touring the U.S. with a fervor. If you get to see them, they put on an exciting show combined with tasteful rocking songs.
