Frederick the Great did not do things by halves. When he hired a new ballet company for his opera house in 1744, he captured the most sought-after star dancer of the day: Barbara Campanini. Soon all of Berlin was crazy about her legs. ‘La Barberina’ probably made her most famous appearance in 1746 in Carl Heinrich Graun's opera “Adriano in Siria”, which will see its first modern revival at the Schlosstheater in 2024.

Dorothee Oberlinger is a world-class recorder player who has won numerous prizes. In addition, as the conductor of her Ensemble 1700 and as the director of the Potsdam Music Festival with a passion for discovery, she regularly provides valuable musical discoveries, including in the field of opera.

In 2024, for example, she presented the baroque opera ‘Adriano in Siria’ by Carl Heinrich Graun (1703-1759) with a top-class vocal ensemble, which will now be released by deutsche harmonia mundi / Sony Music.

The opera, which premiered at the Königliche Oper Berlin in 1746 and has never been performed since, tells the story of the Roman Emperor Hadrian (Adriano), who ruled over Syria in the 2nd century AD. In the three acts, a story of love and intrigue, jealousy and sacrifice unfolds. In the end, Hadrian proves to be a benevolent emperor.

The recording of ‘Adriano in Siria’, which was made in 2024 as part of the Potsdam Music Festival, features countertenor Valer Sabadus in the title role. The Roman soprano Roberta Mameli takes on the role of Emirena, who is coveted by the emperor. Two male sopranos, Bruno de Sá as Farnaspe and Federico Fiorio as Aquilio, can also be heard. Keri Fuge contributes the role of Adriano's future wife with a radiant soprano, while David Tricou (tenor) embodies the role of the defeated Syrian king Osroa. Dorothee Oberlinger, who founded this ensemble in Cologne over 20 years ago, will conduct the Ensemble 1700, which specialises in historical performance practice.

The baroque composer Carl Heinrich Graun was the composition teacher of the later Prussian King Frederick the Great. He also composed 26 operas for the Berlin court alone. Graun's best-known opera is ‘Montezuma’. Dorothee Oberlinger and her ensemble have closed an important gap in the repertoire with the world premiere recording of the opera ‘Adriano in Siria’, which is peppered with brilliant and sensitive arias.

Dorothee Oberlinger
is one of the most amazing discoveries of recent years, an expressive virtuoso who has received numerous awards. Today she is seen as one of the best recorder-players in the world. Her concerts have been received with enthusiasm by critics and audiences alike, earning her unanimous acclaim. Her CDs are regularly fêted as the best new issues on the market.

Dorothee Oberlinger has given solo recitals at festivals all over Europe, in America and Japan at some of the most prestigious venues such as the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, the Musikfestspiele Potsdam, the Settimane Musicale Stresa, the Nederlandse Oude-Musik-Network, the Festival de Musica Antigua Sajazarra, the Warsaw Beethoven Festival, the Europäische Musikfestwoche Passau, the Rheingau-Musikfestival, the Tage der Alten Musik Regensburg and the MDR-Musiksommer. Other venues in which she has played include the Wigmore Hall in London, the National Philharmonie in Warsaw, the Marianischer Saal in Lucerne, the Rosée Theater in Fuji and the Philharmonie in Cologne.

She has been the guest soloist with leading international Baroque ensembles such as London Baroque and Musica Antiqua Köln directed by Reinhard Goebel, and she also plays regularly with modern symphony orchestras such as the WDR-Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester and the Detmolder Kammerorchester.

Dorothee Oberlinger collaborates with the top Italian ensemble "Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca", with whom she has given many concerts throughout Europe. Their joint CD of concertos by Antonio Vivaldi has received numerous awards from the international musical press.

She directs her own "Ensemble 1700", which she formed in 2003. Together they have realized a wide variety of projects relating to the music of the 17th and 18th centuries. In 2004 Dorothee Oberlinger was appointed professor at the renowned Mozarteum academy in Salzburg.
