Info for Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 15; 6 Piano Variations in F Major, Op. 34

Beethoven as a companion: Celebrated pianist and renowned Beethoven specialist Rudolf Buchbinder releases his second album with Deutsche Grammophon following his exclusive contract with the label in 2019. The album captures a breath taking live performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 1. from 2016 between Buchbinder, his long time friend Christian Thielemann , and the Berlin Philharmonics. This does not only represent the first DG release with Christian Thielemann and the Berlin Philharmonics but also celebrates Beethoven’s 250th anniversary this year. The album is completed with Beethoven’s six variations for piano op. 34 recorded in August 2019, which is also when Buchbinder recorded his successful Diabelli Variations.

Rudolf Buchbinder
The Viennese pianist Rudolf Buchbinder is firmly established as one of the world's foremost musicians. He frequently performs in concert with major orchestras and conductors around the world. His comprehensive repertoire encompasses music from Bach to the present day and can be heard in over 100 recordings, many of them award-winning. His interpretations of works by Beethoven are considered benchmarks. He has furthered the interpretative history of the 32 Beethoven sonatas through repeated performances of the entire cycle over a number of decades.

He has already performed the complete Beethoven sonatas in over 45 cities, including Vienna, Berlin, Beijing, Buenos Aires, St Petersburg, Milan, Munich, Dresden, Istanbul and Zurich. In 2014 he performed the complete Beethoven sonatas over a course of seven evenings at the Salzburg Festival, the first pianist in the history of the Festival to do so. Planning for the 50th sonata cycle is already in progress. Buchbinder's interpretations are based on the meticulous study of original sources and he has a passion for collecting historical scores.

Since 2007 Rudolf Buchbinder has been artistic director of the Grafenegg Festival, which has become one of the leading orchestral festivals in Europe under his leadership.
