Info for introducing Antonio Scannapieco
A work that brings hard bop, modern interplay and original writing into dialogue: this is the essence of the debut album by Antonio Scannapieco, marking the recording debut of his quintet titled Introducing Antonio Scannapieco. After winning the 29th edition of the Massimo Urbani International Award – Paolo Piangiarelli Prize, trumpeter Antonio Scannapieco presents his first album for Emme Record Label.
The quintet features Pasquale Geremia on tenor saxophone, Guglielmo Santimone on piano, Giulio Scianatico on double bass, and Angelo Gregorio on drums.
The group’s identity stems from the diverse musical influences its founding members have absorbed over the years through what they love to listen to. The resulting sound is deeply rooted in the hard bop tradition of the 1960s, with the aim of recreating the strong character and the dialogue between tenor saxophone and trumpet that made the great quintets of that era so iconic. At the same time, the compositions reveal a modern direction—a personal and contemporary approach that coexists with a strong connection to the origins of jazz.
After several years of collaboration, the chemistry within the band has grown steadily, along with the desire to continue a shared musical path. This long-standing partnership has given rise to a natural interplay and a collective approach to form: the group does not merely accompany the leader, but breathes as a single organism. Tradition, modernity and personality come together in a work that marks Scannapieco’s entrance among the new voices of the Italian jazz scene.

Antonio Scannapieco
A trumpet player from Salerno born in 1999, Antonio Scannapieco is one of the emerging figures on the European jazz scene. His artistic profile blends a solid classical and jazz background, built at the "G. Martucci" Conservatory of Salerno, with international experience gained during two years spent in Paris—a city that helped refine his cosmopolitan musical language.
In 2024, he achieved his first major recognition by winning the “Conad Jazz Contest” at Umbria Jazz with the "Scannapieco - Geremia 5et." This success at the Perugia festival launched an intense concert schedule that has seen him featured in prominent festivals and clubs, including the Umbria Jazz Winter edition. In 2025, the quintet earned further international acclaim by winning the "New Generation JazzLab" award at the DaJazz festival in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Within this prestigious setting, Antonio had the opportunity to perform not only with his own group but also alongside exceptional mentors and world jazz icons such as Greg Hutchinson, Aaron Goldberg, Dario Deidda, and Roberta Gambarini.
Also in 2025, he won the 29th edition of the Massimo Urbani International Award, presented to him by a jury chaired by Max Ionata. This prestigious victory includes the production of his debut solo album, evocatively titled "Introducing Antonio Scannapieco."
His career is marked by high-level collaborations, having worked with artists such as Mario Biondi, Walter Ricci, the Scannapieco brothers, the Deidda brothers, Giovanni Amato, the Salerno Liberty City Band, Flavio Boltro, Fabrizio Bosso, Luca Mannutza, Lorenzo Tucci, and Gegè Telesforo. As a permanent member of the Salerno Big Band, he has shared the stage with international guests of the caliber of Danilo Rea, the New York Voices, and Anthony Strong. His versatility has led him to perform in world-class institutional settings, such as the Opéra de Monte-Carlo with the Salerno Big Band, the "Giuseppe Verdi" Orchestra of Salerno, and with tenor Vittorio Grigolo. In the funk genre, he collaborates with Dirotta su Cuba, performing at various Italian jazz festivals and periodically at the Blue Note in Milan. Furthermore, he has been a guest in concerts by Stefano Di Battista at the "Duc des Lombards" in Paris, as well as with Omar Hakim and Rachel Z at the Pompei Jazz Festival.
