Unsuk Chin maintains a certain distance from the genre’s rich history. She lets her First Violin Concerto emerge out of primary elements: the interval of a fifth, the pitches produced by open strings with the resulting overtones, and from a sonic background of percussion instruments. As an ensemble within the orchestra, they potentially form a collective solo instrument, which reflects Chin’s fascination with Balinese gamelan music.

The music of Unsuk Chin is a magical realm in which new perspectives are constantly unfolding. Labyrinths of novel sounds and complex structures can be followed by moments of transcendental beauty. For us as an orchestra, this world poses certain challenges — indeed, it is part of Unsuk Chin’s style to test the limits of performing techniques.
