Info for Angli Avantgarden
When the Herensens textile manufacturer Aage Damgaard ran the Angli shirt factory in the 50s and 60s, he invited artists to stay with him. Most famous is the period with the Italian avant-garde artist Piero Manzoni. But Danish artists such as Paul Gadegaard, Sven Dalsgaard, Svend Wiig-Hansen, Robert Jacobsen and Carl-Henning Pedersen also came by and left their mark. Aage Damgaard was a visionary like few others and dared to take chances. He was one of the founders of Herning Højskole and created the restaurants A Hereford Beefstouw.
He also cared about his employees, the seamstresses at the factory. Here, art was an important part of the working environment. Paul Gadegaard decorated the first factory in festive colours and cubist shapes. There was also music. Miles Davis was played out of the factory's loudspeakers. Composer Ditte Rønn has responded to this on the album Angli Avantgarden. She has previously created musical works for Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelt's Museum in Herning - and as she has a past in jazz, it is not beyond her to come up with a jazzy interpretation of Aage Damgaard and Angli Avantgarden.
She has assembled an original quartet to record the music. Jesper Bodilsen on bass, Peter Rosendal on piano, Rhodes and flugelhorn, Lis Wessberg on trombone and Anders Holm on drums. The music is a tribute to the thoughts and visions of Aage Damgaard. Ditte Rønn has been inspired by sewing machines, weaving machines, the noisy soundscape, folk high school spirit, etc. Specifically, the sound of sewing machines appears along the way. Anders Holm is right at the front of the beat with swing and precision. Bodilsen holds the material together. Rosendal and Wessberg weave imaginatively.
The music is divided into 6 parts. I hear the nascent start, the curiosity, the fire, the entrepreneurship, the wildness and finally an uplifted clarity. Ditte Rønn gets to the heart of the material and the possibilities. With Angli Avantgarden, she has created a marvellous tribute to a marvellous and inspiring person.
