The 18 Nocturnes by John Field (1782-1837) are timeless jewels of the piano repertoire. With his works, the Irish composer and pianist built a bridge between the Classical and Romantic periods and is often regarded as a pioneer of the nocturne, a genre that was later made famous by Chopin. Fields' nocturnes are characterized by their dreamy, introspective and lyrical character. They are "tone paintings of the night", each piece a tender, emotional journey through the moonlit landscapes of the soul. The innovative use of the sustaining pedal and the gentle, singing melodies create a unique atmosphere. The Nocturnes are not virtuoso showpieces, but intimate expressions of feeling. They offer pianists the opportunity to explore fine phrasing and nuanced dynamics, which requires both technical precision and deep emotional connection. Notable examples include the Nocturne No. 2 in C minor, a haunting piece that inspired later composers such as Chopin, and the Nocturne No. 5 in B flat major with its delicate, cascading arpeggios. The young English pianist Tyler Hay has made a name for himself as one of the most remarkable pianists of his generation with his recordings for Piano Classics of works by Liszt (PCL 10138), John Ogdon (PCL 10132) and Kalkbrenner (PCL 10190). Tyler Hay, piano

Tyler Hay
was born in 1994 in Kent and began learning the piano at the age of six. He studied with Andrew Haigh at the Kent Music Academy for three years before gaining a place to study at the Purcell School in 2007 where he received a scholarship under the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme. At the Purcell School he studied piano with Tessa Nicholson.

Tyler is currently studying at the Royal Northern College of Music where he receives a full scholarship and is the Keyboard Department’s ABRSM scholar. He has also studied with the Head of Keyboard, Graham Scott and is now studying with the renowned British pianist Frank Wibaut.

Tyler has become a virtuoso pianist, who enjoys tackling some of the most demanding works. He has performed Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Sonata at Wigmore Hall, Scriabin’s Fifth Piano Sonata at the South Bank’s Purcell Room and, as a result of winning the Senior Concerto Competition at the Purcell School, he played Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2013.

Tyler has also won a £5000 scholarship from the Purcell School to further his musical education and, in 2014, reached the category finals of the Royal Over Seas League.
