Info for Gentleman

Towa Bird releases her long-awaited album, "Gentleman". The follow-up to Bird’s 2024 debut American Hero was produced by Patrick Wimberly (MGMT, Blood Orange). The Hong Kong-born, Los Angeles-based musician recorded the 11-track album in Brooklyn and Los Angeles. Towa Bird tapped Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna to contribute to Gentleman.

“In a lot of ways this record feels like a conversation with me, and a reflection of my personality and the body I inhabit. I love that all these songs sound like how I look,” Bird explained.

Towa Bird named Gentleman after a term that symbolizes queer confidence and romance. “The Gentleman isn’t a stage persona,” Bird added. “It’s a cultural lifestyle (e.g. Ziggy Stardust, IGOR, Silk Sonic) that represents a whole world that I want this album, myself and my fans to live in. The boys want to be the gentleman and the girls want to be with the gentleman. If the last album was a pub, this is a cocktail bar. If the last album was a white tank, this is a double-breasted suit.”

The synth-heavy “Dirty Habit” follows “Gentleman,” the album’s title track. Towa Bird wrote the song with Reneé Rapp, Patrick Wimberly, and Julio Tavarez. Directed by Caio Viera, the After Hours-inspired “Dirty Habit” video finds Bird journeying through what turns out to be an eventful night on the streets of Paris.

The now 27-year-old Bird got her start in music in her late teens as the Internet’s favourite guitarist, coming up on TikTok with expressive shredding covers of trending songs. Born Victoria Vergara-Bird (“Towa” is a family nickname that stuck) in Hong Kong and raised between there, Thailand, and London by British and Filipino parents, she started playing guitar in her early teens. Bird grew up on a diet of greats such as Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd, determined to be the next great guitar god. In London she studied at Goldsmiths but dropped out after two years as her profile started to grow online. Music, it was quickly becoming clear, was a tangible career path now open to her — and she moved to U.S. to pursue that dream.

Since taking up electric guitar at the age of 12, Towa Bird has come to rely on her chosen instrument as something of a second voice – an immediate vessel for raw self-expression, often manifested in the form of frenetic yet sublimely executed guitar solos. Now 25 years old, the Hong Kong-born, half-Filipino, half-English singer/songwriter is ready to unleash her own original music unto the world. She says of her music - “I grew up listening to so many male-gazey love songs, and it was important to put something out into the world that felt like the music I wanted for myself when I was a kid.” She’s able to do just that with her sound - one that strikes a rare balance of boldness with sensitivity, and is both wildly explosive while sharing a tender exploration of queerness, identity, and the complexities of love.
