Info for Aleksandra Vrebalov: The Sea Ranch Songs

Aleksandra Vrebalov's The Sea Ranch Songs was commissioned for the Kronos Quartet by the community of The Sea Ranch in celebration of the California retreat's fiftieth birthday. The music does a magnificent job of connecting with the nature, spirit, and architecture of this magical landscape.

This music is more like a multimedia work. The music features rarely documented sounds from the Northern California coastal community and it's nature. The work is paired with a cinematic exploration on DVD directed by videographer Andrew Lyndon.

'The Sea Ranch idea on a global scale might be utopian, but through music, we praise its beauty and affirm its urgent relevance in our wounded world, so much in need of healing.' (Aleksandra Vrebalov)

„The Kronos is, to be sure, one of the world’s greatest chamber ensembles. I’ve always thought that if there were a Nobel Prize in music, its leader David Harrington would be a worthy recipient.“ (Jeff Simon, The Buffalo News)

Andrew Lyndon is a videographer, animator, and filmmaker who creates stand-alone video, freelance multimedia work, video theater sets, and narrative film. Lyndon is an Associate Professor and co-chair in the Animation Department at California College of the Arts. In his career as an animator and motion graphics artist he has collaborated with a range of animation studios, filmmakers, and festivals. In 2010, he curated From Pencil to Pixel, an exhibition of Bay Area Animation studios for The Oakland Museum of California at The Oakland International Airport. Lyndon was also an Artist-in-Residence with the Exploratorium’s Tinkering Studio in 2008.

Aleksandra Vrebalov moved to the United States from her native Serbia in 1995. Receiving numerous commissions from institutions and performers, her works have been performed internationally by soloists, ensembles, and orchestras. She has written or arranged nine works for Kronos. Vrebalov was named 2011 Composer of the Year by Muzika Klasika for her opera Mileva that was commissioned by the Serbian Nation Theater. She has also received acclaim for her collaborations with dance companies and filmmakers, and her music can be heard on Nonesuch and other record labels. Her commission as a part of Kronos’ Fifty for the Future, My Desert, My Rose had its world premiere at Carnegie Hall in April 2016.

Kronos Quartet

Kronos Quartet
For 40 years, San Francisco’s Kronos Quartet—David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola), and Sunny Yang (cello)—has combined a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to continually re-imagining the string quartet experience. In the process, Kronos has become one of the world’s most celebrated and influential ensembles, performing thousands of concerts worldwide, releasing more than 50 recordings, collaborating with many of the world’s most eclectic composers and performers, and commissioning more than 800 works and arrangements for string quartet. A Grammy winner, Kronos is also the only recipient of both the Polar Music Prize and the Avery Fisher Prize. With a staff of ten, the non-profit Kronos Performing Arts Association (KPAA) manages all aspects of Kronos’ work, including the commissioning of new works, concert tours and home-season performances, and education programs.
