Valentin Egel
is the current general music director at the Croatian National Theater Ivan pl. Zajc in Rijeka and the Rijeka Symphony Orchestra.

He is a gold winner of the International Competition for Young Conductors “Lovro von Matačić”, first prize winner of the German university competition “Campus Conducting”, winner of the MDR competition and has been supported by the Conductors Forum since 2017 as part of their “Maestros ofTomorrow” list.

Born in 1994, he comes from a family of musicians, learning to play the piano from his father at an early age. He studied orchestral conducting at the FRANZ LISZT University of Music in Weimar with Nicolás Pasquet, Gunter Kahlert and Ekhart Wycik. In 2019 he enjoyed an exchange stay at the Jacob’s School of Music at Indiana University in Bloomington, USA with Arthur Fagen and has participated in masterclasses with Stefan Klingele, Teodor Currentzis, and Gabriel Feltz.

He has already given repeat concerts with the MDR Symphony Orchestra, Bremen Philharmonic, Jena Philharmonic, Brandenburg Symphony, Nuremberg Symphony and Karlovarský Symfonický Orchestr, the Belgrade Philharmonic, Zagreb Philharmonic and made his debut with orchestras such as the Nuremberg State Philharmonic, NDR Radio Philharmonic, German Radio Philharmonic Saarbrücken, Filhamonie Hradec Kralové, Bergische Symphoniker, the Leipzig Musical Comedy Orchestra and the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra with soloists such as Fabrice Millischer, Gabriel Schwabe, Benedict Klöckner and Bruno Delepelaire.

He has appeared with the Rijeka Symphony Orchestra or as a guest conductor at important international festivals such as the Savonlinna Opera Festival (Finland) and the Dubrovnik Summer Festival (Croatia).

Valentin Egel was chief conductor of the Academic Orchestra of the Technical University of Ilmenau, the Young Symphony Orchestra of South Baden and the KHG Orchestra of Freiburg. During his guest semester in 2018, he took over the management of the Junge Kammerphilharmonie Berlin, with which he made his debut in the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonic.

He has been awarded a Charlotte Krupp scholarship from the Neue Liszt Foundation Weimar several times and was a Richard Wagner scholarship holder in 2018.
