Margret Koell
is one of the leading figures in the field of historical harp performance.
As an ensemble director and harpist, she performs regularly with Il Giardino Armonico and the Accademia Bizantina. Engagements have also taken her to numerous opera houses and concert halls, including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London, the Opéra Garnier in Paris, the Theater an der Wien, the Bavarian State Opera, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg and the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin, as well as to international festivals such as the Salzburg Festival.
She also performs regularly as a chamber musician; since 1988, for example, as a member of the contemporary chamber music ensemble Die Knödel, or with renowned chamber music partners such as Roberta Mameli, Aphrodite Patoulidou, Benedikt Kristjánsson, Stefan Temmingh and Michele Pasotti.
Since 2013, she has released a total of eight CDs of her own recordings; her solo debut album, *L’arpa di Partenope*, was awarded the Diapason d’Or. Her most recent album to date, *Sound Stories*, released in 2024 with Stefan Temmingh, was shortlisted for the German Record Critics’ Award and received a ‘5 diapason’ rating. In addition, in 2016 she founded the Harfenlabor platform, which brings together a diverse range of artistic and academic formats centred on the historical harp. A key part of this is the international Harfenbiennale Innsbruck festival, which she has directed since 2021.
