Info for Unfiltered
Two of the most distinctive voices in Dutch jazz join forces: harmonica virtuoso Hermine Deurloo and guitarist Anton Goudsmit. What begins as a playful exchange between lyricism and groove unfolds into a concert full of unexpected twists, inventive improvisations, and idiosyncratic compositions—plus recognizable covers.
Rooted in Amsterdam’s jazz scene, they combine melodic power with unpredictable energy. The warm, storytelling sound of Hermine’s harmonica is the perfect counterpoint to Anton’s unstoppable guitar playing: a creative whirlwind with irresistible groove, humor, and a unique musical signature. Together they take you on a ride filled with stories, rhythm, playfulness, and emotion—sometimes whisper-soft, then exuberant and explosive.
Anton Goudsmit (guitar/compositions) enchants with inventiveness, infectious joy, and a groove that immediately draws the audience in.
Hermine Deurloo (harmonica) is praised for her warm, lyrical tone and virtuosic, melodic storytelling style. She has performed with a wide range of artists—from Steve Gadd and Mike Boddé to the Metropole Orchestra—and refuses to be boxed into a single genre.
"The warm, storytelling sound of Deurloo’s harmonica forms a natural contrast with Goudsmit’s bouncy, almost pinball-like guitar playing. One track is whisper-soft, the next is exuberant and explosive. Together, the Amsterdam musicians take the listener on an exciting musical journey full of stories, rhythm, playfulness, and emotion." Anton Goudsmit
is a much sought-after player who does amazing things with whatever music he is presented with or writes. In 2001 Anton formed the Ploctones to perform a series of his compositions commissioned by Dutch NPS Radio.
In 2004 a Goudsmit organized a live CD recording of the Ploctones at the Jazz op het Dak festival which was featured on VPRO television. Since then the Ploctones have emerged as a very creative and innovative group, capable of combining grooves and improvisation. Anton also performs internationally with the New Cool Collective as well as Eric Vloeimans’ Fugimundi trio (US tours in 2008 and 2010). Anton Goudsmit won the coveted Boy Edgar Prize in 2010 for his contribution and standing on the Dutch Jazz Scene.
Hermine Deurloo
Deurloo’s style on the chromatic harmonica is characterized as being rich, lyrical, and varied, combined with effortless fluency. Hermine studied saxophone at the Amsterdam Conservatory while, at the same time, teaching herself to play the harmonica. She’s recorded and performed all over the world and with musicians such as Steve Gadd, Jim Black, Han Bennink, Tony Scherr, Willem Breuker Kollektief, Candy Dulfer, Al Jarreau, and the Metropole Orchestra.
Hermine Deurloo and drum legend Steve Gadd, together with Tony Scherr and Kevin Hays, released “Riverbeast” (2019), a collection of tunes composed by Hermine, as well as other members of the group, performed together with Alain Clark as special guest. They’re on tour during 2020, together with pianist John Cowherd.
Her most recent recording before that, “Living Here” (2016) is with pianist and composer Rembrandt Frerichs, cellist Jörg Brinkmann and special guest on drums Jim Black, released by Zennez Records. This group did concerts in the Netherlands, Norway, Italy, Egypt, and Germany.
Previous albums include “Welling” (2015), which she recorded with jazz string quartet Zapp4, “Glass Fish” (2012), released by Challenge Records, and “Crazy Clock” (2005), recorded in New York with bass player/guitarist/vocalist Tony Scherr.
Hermine performed in films and commercials like recently for the Los Angeles based filmcomposer Austin Wintory, for a film of Amin Matalqua. She’s a guest solist on many CD’s and playes with a variety of groups, such as with Mathilde Santing and Ronald Snijders. Hermine has appeared on TV many times, in prime time programs such as “Pauw”, “De Wereld Draait Door” and “Jinek”. In 2011, Hermine was interviewed for the daily news item on RAI 3 in Italy.
In 2022/2023 Hermine is playing concerts with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, the Brussels Jazz Orchestra and pianist Gwilym Simcock and guitarist Mike Walker.
