Info for Mosaïque

Following several critically acclaimed projects (Memories of Paris, Margin Call, Melkoni Project and Storyboard – 4 Clefs Télérama), guitarist Gwen Cahue returns with ‘Mosaïque’, an album that celebrates the gypsy guitar in all its facets, in its most authentic form, as a trio (with rhythm guitar and double bass), whilst exploring new horizons.

The project is based on a repertoire blending original compositions and jazz standards, designed to reveal the different facets of the gypsy guitar, supported by two distinct rhythm sections (guitar/double bass) with complementary styles.

The original compositions present a resolutely modern take on the gypsy style, characterised by the opening up of a musical universe enhanced by the finesse of the arrangements.

This first strand engages in dialogue and forges links with a second inspiration rooted in the origins of gypsy swing: a reinterpretation of a standard performed by Django Reinhardt (Body and Soul), a nod to Latin music (Brazil Sketch, Stochelo Express, in homage to the great gypsy guitarist Stochelo Rosenberg), and an exploration of the art of the ballad and the world of pianists (The Peacocks, by Jimmy Rowles; In Walked Bud, by Thelonious Monk).

This variety and alternation create a rich and varied musical journey, lending the classic gypsy jazz trio a fresh new feel, accessible to the general public yet appealing to connoisseurs alike.

A self-taught musician who honed his craft through direct contact with the masters, Gwen Cahue has forged his own musical language, blending the raw energy of Jimi Hendrix with the melodic inventiveness of Django Reinhardt. It was in Strasbourg, through his interactions with leading figures of the genre — Biréli Lagrène, Yorgui Loeffler — that he embraced the Manouche tradition before expanding it to encompass a broad musical palette.

His discography of five albums — from Memories of Paris (2019) to Mosaïque (2026) — traces an evolving journey, between confident virtuosity and compositional maturity. Storyboard (2023) was awarded 4T by Télérama, confirming his status as a unique voice in contemporary acoustic jazz.

A guest of Jean-Félix Lalanne for Autour de la Guitare, and involved in the Selmer 607 and Django Club projects, he has established himself as a leading soloist whilst actively contributing to the transmission of a living tradition.

Gwen Cahue, guitar

Gwen Cahue
From a very young age, Gwen Cahue was passionate about music and quickly taught himself to play the guitar. He began by learning various styles (Jimmy Hendrix being his first inspiration) before discovering, by chance, the music of Django Reinhardt. Immediately captivated by Django's genius, he set aside the electric guitar and discovered a deep passion for the acoustic sounds of this string jazz. His desire to deepen his knowledge led him to settle in Strasbourg, a true stronghold of Gypsy jazz, where he had the opportunity to meet some of the greatest musicians of the style (Bireli Lagrène, Tchavolo Schmitt, Yorgui Loefler, etc.), from whom he developed his own unique musical style.

After a few years, he moved to Paris, where he performed regularly with his trio in jazz clubs (Atelier Charonne, Sunset, Duc des Lombards, Taverne de Cluny).

He also participates in the "Swingtet," a group paying tribute to Django Reinhardt in the purest tradition, with whom he performs at various festivals ("Samois/Seine," "Django L'H de Barcelone," "Jazz à Fontdouce," and "Jazz entre les deux tours de La Rochelle") and invites artists such as Sansévérino, Romane, and Angélo Debarre.

Gwen also appears as a guest in projects like "Autour de la guitare avec Jean-Felix Lalanne," "Selmer 607," "Django Club," and "Rainbow Duet," where he shares the stage with some of the most renowned guitarists of the new generation.

He released his first album as a leader, "Memories of Paris" (Label Ouest, 2019), which showcases his diverse influences, ranging from American jazz to Django Reinhardt and Michel Petrucciani.

In August 2021, he released his second album: “Margin Call” Gwen Cahue Acoustic Quartet, accompanied by William Brunard, Julien Cattiaux and Bastien Ribot.
