Info for Gruodis: Piano Works

The music and teaching of Juozas Gruodis (1884-1948) laid the foundations for a national school of composition in Lithuania in the first half of the 20th century. His style absorbed influences from East and West - Sergei Rachmaninov, Alexander Scriabin, Frédéric Chopin, Claude Debussy, Max Reger, Richard Strauss - and from Lithuanian folk music. Although the piano works heard here were composed within just eight years, they display considerable variety, from restrained to passionate and powerful, all expressed with full-bodied late-romantic virtuosity and verve.
