Biography Ana-Marija Markovina
Dr. Ana-Marija Markovina
Pianist and author Ana-Marija Markovina studied in Vienna and Weimar, completed her concert examination at the University of Music in Berlin, and earned her doctorate (Dr. Sci. mus.) at the University of Music and Theatre in Hamburg. Markovina’s extensive career as a solo concert pianist has taken her to major stages throughout Germany and internationally. She has appeared as a guest artist at—among others—the Hamburg Bachfest, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Klavier-Festival Ruhr, the Beethovenfest Bonn, the Brandenburg Summer Concerts, the *Semaine Sainte en Arles*, and the International Piano Stars Festival in Latvia. She has performed with numerous international orchestras.
A key artistic focus of her work is the recording of complete cycles and world premiere recordings. Her recording of the complete works for solo piano by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was released in early 2022 by Hänssler Classic. A recording of the complete piano works of his sister—the composer and pianist Fanny Hensel—is scheduled for release in 2026.
In 2014, to mark the 300th anniversary of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s birth, she released a 26-CD box set, for which she received the German Record Critics' Award (*Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik*), the *Choc de Classica*, and a Grammy nomination.
A close artistic collaboration with the composer Stefan Heucke is documented across three CD recordings.
In 2019, her book *Glücks-Spiel* was published by Staccato Verlag. In January 2023, she was awarded her doctorate *summa cum laude*. Her book *KLAVIER-Spiel: Künstlerische Identität, Karriere und Lebensglück* (Piano Play: Artistic Identity, Career, and Life Happiness) was also published by Staccato Verlag.
Her third book, *Bei-Spiel*, explores the lives of individuals who—alongside their professional careers—dedicate themselves to playing the piano.
In 2021, she founded the "Kölner Klavierzimmer—International Competition for Amateurs." The promotion of amateur musicianship is central to Markovina's pedagogical work.
