Info for Glissement du Temps (Slip of Time)
The new album offers a true musical journey through ten previously unreleased tracks by leading members of the collective and three other distinguished composers: François Bourassa, Gentiane MG and Pierre de Bethmann, presenting works that blend elegantly into a diverse sonic mosaic.
The record doubles as a tribute to saxophonist Mario Allard, a long-standing member of the collective who died on January 12, 2025, at the age of 42, following an accidental fall from a balcony in Montreal’s Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood. Allard had been active in Montreal’s jazz clubs since 2001, released his self-titled debut album independently in 2007, and in 2016 graduated from McGill University with a Master’s in Jazz Performance. He had studied with American saxophonist Donny McCaslin and recorded extensively with Bédard, appearing on the AUGUSTE Quartet albums Exalta calma (2020) and Particules Sonores (2024). He had also performed alongside Robert Charlebois, Yann Perreau, and Antoine Corriveau. In the Jazzlab Orchestra‘s documentation, Allard is listed as playing soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, and clarinet across the ensemble’s output.
The three guest composers each bring distinct backgrounds to the record. François Bourassa, born in Montreal in 1959, is a jazz pianist whose work draws on Thelonious Monk, Brad Mehldau, and Chick Corea alongside classical and Romantic influences. He won the Festival de jazz de Montréal competition in 1985 and took the Juno Award for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year in 2002 for the live album Live. In 2007, he received the Oscar Peterson Award at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. He also records for Effendi. Gentiane MG, born February 26, 1992, studied at the Quebec Music Conservatory in Saguenay before completing a jazz performance degree at McGill University. Her trio has released Eternal Cycle (Arté Boréal, 2017), Wonderland (Effendi, 2019), and Walls Made of Glass (2022), and has received the OPUS Award for Discovery of the Year (2020) and the CBC/Radio-Canada Jazz Award (2018). Pierre de Bethmann, born in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1965, trained at Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1989 after graduating from the ESCP management school in Paris. He co-founded the trio Prysm, which recorded four albums on Blue Note between 1995 and 2001. He won the Prix Django Reinhardt in 2004 and the Victoires du Jazz for instrumental album of the year in 2008, and created the Medium Ensemble — a ten-to-twelve-piece large-ensemble project — in 2013.
Slip of Time is the Jazzlab Orchestra‘s ninth album and the group’s twentieth-anniversary release.
