Info zu From the Beginning

Marc Bouchkov
Belgian violinist of Russian-Ukrainian heritage, Marc Bouchkov is a sophisticated artist blending research and study with highly emotional musical input in his performances.

Highlights of the 2025/26 season include his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, performing Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto under Louis Langrée, as well as a series of recitals with Mikhail Pletnev in Madrid, Barcelona and Salzburg. The season also featured appearances with the Liège Royal Philharmonic and Lionel Bringuier, including concerts in Liège and at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, a return to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and performances at the Verbier Festival in Shenzhen.

On 6 November 2026, Bouchkov will release his new album, From the Beginning, on Orchid Classics. The album brings together violin miniatures associated with and arranged by Jascha Heifetz alongside Bouchkov's own compositions, reflecting both the violinistic tradition that has shaped him and his own creative voice as a composer.

Deutsche Grammophon Gold has published his live performances of Ysaÿe sonatas and concerto from the Verbier Festival. He also recorded an all-Mendelssohn album with pianist Claire Huang-Ci for Berlin Classics. His first album on Harmonia Mundi featured two premieres by Eugène Ysaÿe and two works composed by Bouchkov himself, and was awarded a Diapason d'Or and a Diapason Découverte. A close collaborator of living composers, he has also recorded chamber music by Igor Raykhelson and two violin concertos by Alexey Shor.

Among previous season highlights, Bouchkov performed Tchaikovsky with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and Juanjo Mena, and Sibelius with the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI under Marta Gardolińska. At the Verbier Festival he has appeared with partners including Klaus Mäkelä, Lahav Shani, Mao Fujita, Blythe Engstroem, Martin Fröst and Julien Quentin.

Other recent projects have included performances with the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Gábor Takács-Nagy, a tour with the Verbier Chamber Orchestra in China and Hong Kong, a tour in Japan with Norichika Iimori, a Seoul debut with Sunwook Kim, and the conclusion of his residency with the Netherlands Philharmonic under Lorenzo Viotti, Ryan Bancroft and Hannu Lintu. He has performed Brahms' Double Concerto with cellist Mischa Maisky under Christoph Eschenbach, and the complete cycle of Beethoven's Violin Sonatas with Mao Fujita at the Verbier Festival, Oji Hall in Tokyo and the Israel Philharmonic Hall.

His orchestral appearances include performances with the Filarmonica della Scala and Lorenzo Viotti, the Munich Philharmonic and Philippe Jordan, hr-Sinfonieorchester and Christoph Eschenbach, the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra and Valery Gergiev, the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra under Gábor Takács-Nagy, and the Brussels Philharmonic under Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider. He has also appeared with the NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Orchestre National de Belgique, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI in Turin and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège, collaborating with conductors including Stanislav Kochanovsky, Ludovic Morlot, Lionel Bringuier and Maxim Vengerov.

Bouchkov has performed in many of the world's leading concert halls, including Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Teatro alla Scala, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Great Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonia, Tonhalle Zürich, Maison de la Radio et de la Musique in Paris and the Konzerthaus Berlin.

In great demand as a recitalist and chamber musician, he is a regular guest of the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, the Tsinandali Festival in Georgia and the Jerusalem International Chamber Music Festival in Israel. His chamber music partners have included Evgeny Kissin, Mischa Maisky, Sir András Schiff, Lahav Shani, Klaus Mäkelä and Behzod Abduraimov.

His competition prizes include the gold medal at the Montreal International Musical Competition and the silver medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition.

Marc Bouchkov was born into a family of violinists. He received his first lessons at the age of five from his grandfather, followed by studies with Claire Bernard and Boris Garlitsky. He later studied with Mihaela Martin as a Young Soloist in the postgraduate programme at the Kronberg Academy, and has for many years been under the musical tutorship of Eduard Wulfson.

Bouchkov performs on a historical G. P. Maggini violin from 1630.

Marc Bouchkov is Professor of Violin at the Royal Conservatoire of Liège and at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. His students have won first prizes at competitions including Grumiaux in Brussels, Ysaÿe in Liège and Grunewald in Berlin, as well as numerous orchestral positions.
