Info for Les choses qui nous liaient
Laurence Castera releases his new album "Les choses qui nous liaient." An introspective artist with a slightly raspy voice, Laurence Castera offers a folk sound with rock roots that unfolds as he reveals the doubts within him. A performance rich in nuance, where a musical universe that is both deep and refined carries the listener from laughter to reflection, from melancholy to lightness.
To mark the occasion, EnBeauce.com spoke to the artist from Saint-Philibert. “It was like an accidental seven-year hiatus,” he explained right from the start. His second album was released in 2019 and a major tour was due to follow, until the pandemic disrupted those plans. “Then my second album was a bit too old to sell to venues or festivals in 2022.” It took him a few months and some experiences to draw upon before he could start writing again. By the time he’d worked on a new album, seven years had passed.
Titled Les choses qui nous liaient, this new album is precisely ab out the bonds between people. “It’s about the bonds I share with those close to me and the universal bonds that everyone experiences. (...) I realised that, ultimately, every song is about a connection we can have with someone.”
Among her new songs, Laurence tells us the story behind the writing of Vague. “It was during a writing workshop in Petite Vallée where we were sharing memories. I was paired with a girl who told me an almost mundane memory about taking clowning lessons. (...) This song was born from that conversation, to realise who we really are.” The theme also carried through to the production of this track, which aims to be simple, featuring the voice of her co-producer Salomé Leclerc.
The artist wanted to take this raw aspect further with his recording technique for this project. With just a few microphones scattered around a room, he surrounded himself with talented musicians to create songs that could be considered demos. “It results in something imperfect. We played the songs thinking we’d redo them, but in the end I didn’t want to redo them,” explained the artist from Beauce.“ It’s a completely live album; we didn’t correct a thing. (...) When you listen to it, you can hear noises—you can hear a train passing by in one of the songs, for instance.”
Laurence Castera hopes to eventually go on tour with this new album to make the most of it, more so than with the previous one.
Laurence Castera, guitar, vocals
Laurence Castera
made his first steps on stage in 2009, while playing guitar with the pop group Automat. He then made himself known to the general public in 2014 during a remarkable appearance on the show La Voix, just one year before he won the Audience Award at the Festival de la chanson de Granby. In 2017, Le bruit des mots was released, a first album of original material self-produced and co-directed by Francis Perron (Bears of Legend). Following the release of this first album, Laurence puts on a hundred show dates in Quebec in addition to a tour in Europe while his music can also be heard on various television shows. Two of the fourteen multifaceted pop-folk songs on the album are at the top of the radio charts.
At the end of 2018, Laurence went back into the studio to record a 2nd album, this time with Simon Pednault (2 nominations at the 2019 Junos with Gabrielle Shonk and Tire le Coyote) who wears the hat of co-director in addition to co-writing the arrangements with Laurence. Les hauts lieux was released on April 12th 2019.
This album contains no booklet.
