Info for Melancolie

“Having a choice of roots is always an asset. Growing up multilingual fosters cognitive flexibility… I was lucky enough to live between Romania and Germany,” says Konstantin Krimmel. Together with his longtime musical partner Ammiel Bushakevitz, who also has “mixed roots”, he sought to bring together the composers Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) and Eusebius Mandyczewski (1857–1929), who met in Vienna in the late 1870s and maintained a close friendship: on the one hand, the established composer from faraway Hamburg, author of nearly 200 Lieder and vocal works; on the other, the young student from distant Bukovina, son of an Orthodox priest, who grew up immersed in the Romanian of his mother’s side and the Ukrainian of his father’s, a pupil of a Mendelssohn disciple.

His eighteen Romanian Songs were published in 1885 in a bilingual Romanian-German edition, based on texts by Vasile Alecsandri (1821–1890), “a magnificent poet who wrote in a highly evocative style that has deep connections with nature. A nature that I love and from which I draw upon as a source of interpretation in every recital,” says Krimmel. They are recorded here for the first time in their original language, Romanian.

The two composers also share a love of Schubert—Mandyczewski was the first publisher of his complete works—a fascination with folk songs, and a taste for melancholy, which is felt throughout this programme.

Konstantin Krimmel, baritone
Ammiel Bushakevitz, piano

Konstantin Krimmel
of German-Romanian descent, received his first musical training at the St. Georgs Chorknaben in Ulm. At the age of 21, he then began his vocal studies with Prof. Teru Yoshihara, which the singer completed with distinction in 2020. In the meantime, he has been working with Tobias Truniger in Munich. Even as a student Konstantin Krimmel developed a special love for Lieder and opera, and quickly expanded his repertoire. Winning numerous competitions has decisively advanced his career. Between 2021-2023, Konstantin Krimmel was promoted as a BBC New Generation Artist. In 2023, he was named 'Best Newcomer' at the Oper! Awards and "Young Singer of the Year' by Opernwelt, and was named 'Male Singer of the Year' at the 2024 Opus Klassik Awards.

He tours internationally and has given Lieder recitals at the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Konzerthaus Vienna, the Heidelberger Frühling, the Schubertíada de Vilabertran as well as the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, Wigmore Hall London and the Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

He has been a member of the Bavarian State Opera since autumn 2021. He also sings opera at major festivals like Salzburg and Munich. Konstantin Krimmel is an exclusive artist of the French label Alpha Classics.

Ammiel Bushakevitz
began playing the piano at the age of four. As a song accompanist, soloist, and chamber musician, he has performed on six continents, including appearances at Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, the Paris Philharmonie, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Shanghai Concert Hall. His festival appearances include the festivals of Salzburg, Lucerne, Bayreuth, Aix-en-Provence, Heidelberg, Milan, Montreal, Beijing, Brasília, and Melbourne, as well as the Schubertiades in Schwarzenberg, Hohenems, Vilabertran, and Tel Aviv.

Ammiel Bushakevitz grew up in South Africa and studied in Leipzig and Paris. His teachers included Phillip Moll and Alfred Brendel. He has a particular love for song and was one of the last private students of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He works with leading song singers, including İlker Arcayürek, Christian Gerhaher, Laetitia Grimaldi, Thomas Hampson, Samuel Hasselhorn, Julia Kleiter, Katharina Konradi, Konstantin Krimmel, Dame Felicity Lott, Catriona Morison, Anna Prohaska, Anna Lucia Richter, and Nadine Sierra.

Engagements in the 2024/25 season include concerts in the United States, Canada, Iceland, Brazil, South Africa, Israel, and Japan, in venues such as Wigmore Hall London, Salle Bourgie in Montreal, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Palau de la Música in Barcelona, the Prinzregententheater Munich, and the concert halls of Cologne and Vienna. In July 2024, Ammiel Bushakevitz and baritone Konstantin Krimmel released the album Mythos (songs and ballads by Schubert and Loewe) on the Alpha label. Together with baritone Samuel Hasselhorn, he will release the second album of the “Schubert 200” project with Harmonia Mundi in February 2025. The first album, Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin, was awarded the Diapason d’or de l’année in 2024.

In 2013, Ammiel Bushakevitz released his debut solo album, a recording of piano works by Schubert. The recording became the soundtrack of the Austrian film Gwendolyn. Since then, several award-winning recordings have been released on labels such as Harmonia Mundi, Alpha, BIS, Pentatone, Hänssler, and Berlin Classics. In partnership with the Hänssler Classics label, Ammiel Bushakevitz is currently engaged in a project to record the complete solo piano works of Franz Schubert between 2024 and 2028.

Ammiel Bushakevitz regularly gives masterclasses for young pianists, for example at the Israel Academy of Music in Jerusalem, the University of Queensland in Australia, the Beijing Conservatory, the Universitat de Barcelona, and the University of Colorado. He also gives benefit concerts and masterclasses for humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia, Brazil, China, Morocco, Mexico, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. Ammiel Bushakevitz lives in Paris and is an alumnus of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), a member of the Société des Arts, Sciences et Lettres de Paris, an Edison Fellow of the British Library in London, and artistic director of the international arts association Les Voix d’Orphée.
